How to Beat the Spring Break Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

Now unless you are heeding to like Cabo or somewhere warm for Spring Break, you may be asking yourself, “Well what should I do?” Sometimes when you live in the town your college is in or even within a 10-mile radius, it can be hard to get excited for what should be every college students favorite time of year. But fear not for there are plenty of things to do that will turn your break into one to brag about.

Volunteer

Volunteering is one of the best ways to spend Spring Break! It is a great way to support a cause you are passionate about and it looks killer on a resume. Look around in your town and see if the local daycare, animal shelter, nursing home, soup kitchen, etc. needs an extra hand for a week. If you are still wondering what to do with your life, sometimes volunteering can be just what you need to give you a push in a certain direction. If you want to be really adventurous push yourself outside of your comfort zone and volunteer at a place that you wouldn’t normally think would be somewhere you would be interested in. You may find something completely new that you love!

Working

Now, as a college student everyone is wondering how they can score a few extra bucks for the last half of the semester. Getting a job over spring break is something that may be kind of difficult unless you already have something lined up. Because it is only a week long, not many people will be will to  hire someone new who will be leaving before they can even really start. This is not to say that there aren’t ways to make money though. Don’t leave out babysitting! A lot of parents would love to have a qualified college student watch their children, mainly because you are responsible. A bonus is if you have a license to take them to the park or some fun places. Organize a yard sale after some spring cleaning. You know the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Well make some money off of your unwanted items by reselling things in good condition. There are even some places that will pay you for good quality, in style clothes. Google places like this in your area and score some major bucks for a new summer wardrobe! Spring break is also a perfect time to line up a job for summer. Try to line up some interviews for the time that you are home with employers you are looking into for the summer. Be sure to have some questions and a resume on hand during your interview and remember to dress for success.

Take a Road Trip

A road trip is a great idea for a few days or even a week. It will get you out of the house and allow you to see some awesome places along the way. The best part is you can grab some friends to go with you or you can go it alone! Taking a road trip with a bunch of pals is a really fun way to spend a few days of your break. Take some pictures, hit the sights, try some epic food, maybe meet some cuties. What could be better? You don’t even have to go somewhere really warm. NYC, Boston and Canada are awesome places to spend some time and they aren’t in the 80s at this time of year. If you are looking for somewhere a little warmer and have a little more time try somewhere like New Orleans, Florida or maybe take a tour of the South for a while. There are some beautiful places in this country! So pick a destination, fill up your gas tank and hit the road.

Get Ahead on Your School Work

Now hear this out before you head to the next page. If you have the time to spare over spring break it’s a great time to catch-up or get ahead of your work for class. Midterms are a stressful time and sometimes we neglect work that has piled up from the previous week, but spring break is the time where you can finish that work on your own time. If you get ahead of some things, you won’t be as stressed when you head back to school. Some professors even assign homework over break. But it will keep your brain stimulated between all of those Gossip Girl reruns that will be droning in the background.

Meet Up with Friends from Home

When you are away at school it can be easy to get caught up and neglect friends from back home. Break is an excellent time to get back in touch with those who have stayed back at home. Send out a few text messages and see if anyone would like to grab some coffee, hit a movie or do a little shopping for a day. It is great to catch up with people and find out what has been going on back on your turf.

Spring break is a time where you can do so many things that don’t involve sitting on the couch, munching on chocolate, though this can be a good idea at times, too. Sometimes you just need time to yourself: curling up in bed with your favorite movie and some take-out. It’s a good time to recharge and just enjoy being home. You can pick up a new hobby, start a workout routine or completely reinvent yourself. Get a new haircut, buy an outfit that looks killer on you or pick a new makeup routine. Spring is all about a new beginning. The flowers will be blooming soon and the air will be getting warmer and the gloom and slush of winter wills soon be gone. Whatever you decide to do make the most of it and come back to school refreshed and ready to take on the home stretch of your classes!
