Best of the Twitterverse: Find Your Top Followers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

With the integration of nearly all media and communication from print or face-to-face interaction to online outlets, it comes as no surprise to see that Twitter is taking over the Internet.

Twitter is commonly used by celebrities or public figures, but many college students, including fabulous collegiettes™, have created Twitter names and tweet as often as these celebrities.  Whether you follow friends or choose to follow every celebrity with an account, here is a list of the top 10 people or organizations that college students should follow, in no particular order:

  1. @OMGFacts
: While some of the facts tweeted by OMG Facts are outrageous and sometimes, even, unbelievable, following @OMGFacts is a great way to learn something new every day, provide a good laugh or even improve your researching skills.  Facts such as “Taiwan has a toilet-themed restaurant” are questionable and strange, but can be proven by doing a simple Google search.  Whether these facts are all entirely correct or not is not the reason to follow @OMGFacts; the opportunity to learn something new every day and be entertained while doing so is more than enough reason to follow along.
  2. @BarackObama: For starters, it’s incredibly modern and beneficial that our president has a Twitter.  It allows tweeters to follow our nation’s leader and receive updates about press conferences, addresses and State of the Union speeches. Every generation of young adults should be as informed as possible about government, the president, foreign affairs and other news out of the White House. Following this account lets you get to the important info right away without scrolling through various headlines on a newspaper’s website.
  3. @blakeshelton: This country star has a lot to say and isn’t afraid to put it all on Twitter.  Blake Shelton is usually intoxicated when tweeting, but that just makes it more entertaining. Stars can have fun too!  So if you are looking for some comedic relief during your busy day, check out Shelton.  His hold-nothing-back tweets are hilarious and makes you wonder how he could possibly say the things he does on the website.  Each is unique and following him may also get you interested in his new competition reality show, “The Voice,” or even country music.

  4. @nytimes
: Following The New York Times is another way to make sure you are informed of any important national or global news.  With helpful links to the actual stories, @nytimes provides up-to-date information about prominent events and people.  As aforementioned collegiettes™, there is no such thing as too informed and the more news sources you follow on Twitter, the better.
  5. @TheOnion: Everything about The Onion is hilarious.  It is the perfect organization to follow if you’re looking for a good laugh with substance.  The mock news organization is fresh, witty and genius in the world of comedy and each tweet is funnier than the last.  It’s a perfect outlet to catch up on current events but to remind you not take life too seriously, either.
  6. @ENews: Because celebrities have become a large part of American culture, it may come in handy to know all about the people we have come to observe and even idolize.  As drama, turmoil and breaking news encompass celebrity life, E! News is there to report and dish the details for the whole world to read.  If you are interested in celebrity news, this is the account to follow.

  7. @JennyMcCarthy
: Not only is Jenny McCarthy beautiful, she is funny, inspirational and charming.  Her tweets are typically self-deprecating, which is always good for to get a laugh out of people, but she also tweets to spread awareness about autism.  While she makes sure to respond to a lot of her fans on Twitter, she talks about anything and everything that comes to her mind.  Women of all ages, especially collegiettes™, should follow @JennyMcCarthy to get some good-hearted comedy, advice, advocacy and a glimpse into the life of a successful, powerful woman.
  8. @Joan_Rivers: As expected from this comedienne, actress and television personality, her unrelenting attitude and humor draw many to her Twitter profile.  She discusses everything from the Royal Wedding to ridiculous celebrity news.  Her Twitter account serves as side-splitting commentary on current events that never ceases to entertain her followers.
  9. @TFLN: Their tagline reads, “Remember that text that you shouldn’t have sent last night? We do…” Every collegeiette™ needs a good laugh from Texts From Last Night to remind themselves that they’re not the only ones who sent that humiliating message after having a bit too much fun. Plus, who doesn’t like to laugh at others’ embarrassing moments?

  10.  @HerCampusOswego:
We know it’s a little biased, but we love our site! Follow our tweets for links to the latest content and happenings on campus!

No matter who you follow, collegeiettes™, it is important to use Twitter as a source of both entertainment and news, as an informative and comedic relief in your daily lives. Happy following!
