Overalls are a current trend that usually divides people, but, love ‘em or hate ‘em, they are one of the hottest trends rounding out the summer and heading into fall. Now, I’m sure as you read this you’re thinking, “this is ridiculous, overalls are for kids.” Well, I’m here to tell you that this is no longer the case. These latest additions are a lot more chic than their predecessors in the ’90s with varying fabrics, colors, and silhouettes, though they remain true to their tomboy roots. Throughout the summer, we saw that “short-alls”–overalls that feature a short as opposed to the long pant–took the main stage, but with fall just around the corner the original design is coming out to play. Worried about looking more like a farmer than a fashionista? Read on for tricks on how to strap yourself into fashion’s hottest trend.

Bring Patterns into Play: A classic pair of blue overalls can easily be worn over any kind of patterned shirt–and the more vibrant and fun the better! Even the overalls themselves can be some crazy colors paired with patterns to really play up the trend.

Go for the Pinafore: A pinafore is essentially a dress that works the same way that an overall does, but is a bit more girly than the typical overall.

Wear with a Cropped Blouse or Top: The cropped top is another trend of the past that has been making appearances on the runways since spring. Wearing one of these kinds of tops with the overalls may seem very ’90s, but it actually makes the overalls really fresh.

Variety of Pant Leg Options: Tired of the same old skinny jean? The greatest thing about overalls is the many different styles of pant legs. They range from baggy to tapered and can dramatically change the look of the overalls.

The final aspect I want to touch on is footwear because I believe that this can make or break an outfit. Of all the styles of shoes available, there are a few different types that I think make the overalls look top-notch.

Flats: All kinds of flats look great with overalls. Whether you pair them with ballet flats, Converse, high-tops, keds, oxfords or brogues, any kind of flat shoe shows off the overalls.

Heels: This is something that I have been seeing lately worn with overalls and I love it. I think it’s a great way to bump up the class of the trend and any type of heel looks amazing.

Boots: With this style, though, I’m not talking knee- or even calf-length boots, but ankle booties. I was once skeptical about this option, but after seeing it worn, it completely won me over.

Now you know some of the essentials of wearing the ever-popular overalls. So, go out there and bring back the clothing of your childhood, but this time around, with a little more style.
