Somehow, I am about to wrap up my first year of college. This means that thousands of other people are preparing to start their freshman years. It feels like I was a senior in high school forever ago, but lately I’ve been reminiscing on my journey to OSU. Everyone wants to know why I chose to become a Buckeye, and the answer isn’t as black and white as you’d think. I figured I’d explain my decision process and why it’s okay if you don’t get some sort of sign telling you about your future school.

For me, choosing a college was not like an episode of Say Yes to the Dress; I never toured anywhere and received a miraculous “this is the one” feeling. People like to tell you that you’ll instantly feel at home when you’re in the right place. Considering my bedroom was nowhere to be found on any of the six campuses I set foot on, I found this advice useless. One thought that persisted throughout the whole time was that I would probably be fine anywhere.

I guess I always had OSU in the back of my mind as something I could not pass up if I got in, but I can’t even tell you why I thought that way. I know for a fact that, had I not received acceptance to Ohio State, I would be a content person at another university. When I got in, I actually cried a little (something I don’t do often). Still, I wasn’t ready to instantly commit.

In the end, there was just something about OSU that made me think it was the best option. There was no definable emotion or revelation, I just kind of went with it. I guess you just have to dive in and press the “I accept my admission” button in the email from the college that feels best. There is a very low chance that you’ll pick a place and be miserable.

Becoming a Buckeye is one of my greatest decisions, despite not having any a real reasoning behind it. Maybe some people had a different experience and did have a moment of clarity where they “just knew”. If you have one of those moments, that’s great! But if you don’t, it does not mean you aren’t choosing a school you’ll absolutely love.
