Water: The Way to Go

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

When the sun comes out and the clouds disappear, that usually means it’s time to get outside and play. Whether that means going for a bike ride with your friends, playing a little Frisbee, or just laying outside and enjoying the sunshine, those rays brings out a more outdoorsy side of us all. As college students, when thirst hits a lot of us might automatically reach for a beer or a soda, but did you know that those drinks are actually going to make you thirstier later on?

The one drink you should be reaching for multiple times a day is actually water. I know, ever since you were little your mom, teachers, and coaches probably always reminded you to stay hydrated and drink water. But did you really listen?

Water makes up over 60% of your body (usgs.gov) and when the sun comes out, you lose a lot of water just from normal day to day activities, such as walking around, to running errands, and of course the time you spend at the gym. We can lose most of our bodies water content throughout a day, and drinking sugary drinks such as beer, soda, and alcohol, don’t replenish that lost water content.

Drinking enough water (about 8 glasses) is not only important to help replenish what you lose, but it also offers great advantages for your skin and body. Makeup and creams can help your skin look fresh and stay youthful, but water contributes a lot more, and if you spend a lot of your weekends out drinking, that neglect can cause a great deal of wear and tear on your skin. A woman’s healthy-looking skin is a very inviting aspect for a man, and if that’s not enough of a reason for you to incorporate more water in your day, it can also help with maintaining a healthy weight.

Whether you’re trying to loose the weight you gained freshman year, trying to tone up, or just trying to stay in shape, water can be your best friend on the road to your goal. It not only boosts your energy, but can also help curb your appetite and aid in digestion. This all means that you’ll be one step closer to your goal with each glass of water you drink.

Whether you trying to lure a man with your luscious skin, keep your body in tip-top shape or just be as healthy as you can, drinking enough H2O will aid you in more ways than you can imagine. So next time you reach for that ice-cold beer, soda, or sugary drink, remember the importance of getting enough water each day. Maybe you’ll drink a water instead, maybe you’ll switch some water out and have a glass every other drink. Either way you’re helping your body out and making a healthier
you.
