DIY Halloween Costumes: American Apparel Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

I don’t know about you, but American Apparel is my go-to when it comes to costumes for themed parties and Halloween weekend. It has everything! From neon tights and fanny packs to high-waist shorts and crop tops, you’re always guaranteed to find just what you’re looking for. And the best part? The clothes are so versatile that you can wear it more than once! Not only in a different costume, but in your everyday outfits as well. So, I thought I would share a few do-it-yourself costume ideas that you can put together at our campus’ American Apparel store right on 13th!

Gum on the Bottom of a Shoe
Now you may be thinking this costume is a little dorky… okay let’s be honest, it is. But, it can be really cute too! It’s fairly simple: a hot pink dress and a toddler shoe like this one glued to a headband. Unfortunately, a toddler shoe is one of the few things you won’t find at American Apparel, but luckily Target is just a short EmX ride away! Then, add hot pink blush, eye shadow, and lipstick… and voilà! You’re gum on the bottom of a shoe.

Cupcake
This costume is the perfect example of an outfit that you can wear in your everyday life after Halloween is all said and done. Simply wear this or any other American Apparel skirt in tan or blue, add a hot pink camisole, and top it off with a cherry red knot headband. You can also add sparkles to your face as a little extra touch!

Captain America
After seeing Captain America and The Avengers 2, there is no other super hero I’d rather be this Halloween! Wear this red, white, and blue leotard and accessorize it with a Captain America shield. I recommend wearing silver eye makeup and red lipstick for the full effect.

Tourist Don’t say goodbye to summer just yet! Rock high-waist shorts, the Royal Anchorage tie-up blouse, and fanny pack, and you’ll be set to tour Eugene’s nightlife! You can complete the look with a classic pair of flip-up sunglasses.

Highlighter
This is definitely the comfiest Halloween costume of all-time, and is perfect for a group of friends! Slip on neon leggings and a crop top, and your ready to go! Just don’t forget to add the “Hi-Lite” logo to your shirt. You can create a stencil by printing the logo onto a thick sheet of paper and cutting it out. Then, place it on your shirt and fill in the cutout with paint or sharpie. Make sure to wear matching neon eyeliner too!

Let us know what you think of these ideas, and sound off in the comments with your own! You can also find dozens of other ideas on the American Apparel homepage. Good luck and happy Halloween!
