Books to Read This Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

Whenever I have holiday breaks, I always have a stack of books I want to read waiting for me at home. I love to read. But, in college, not many people have time to read. I know I don’t. So, here are some great books you should check out and read this winter!

Marley and Me by John Grogan

Marley and Me is a fantastic book. I have reread this book so many times. I first read it in the fourth grade, and have been picking it up each year. Grogan’s style of writing makes it feel like you’re talking with an old friend. Check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/Marley-Me-Life-Worlds-Worst/dp/0060817097/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1512510835&sr=1-1&keywords=marley+and+me

Bossy Pants by Tina Fey

I LOVE TINA FEY AND YOU SHOULD TOO. This book is great. It’s funny, it’s a fast read and makes you feel like you are a part of Tina Fey’s inner circle. If you haven’t read her book yet, drop everything and buy it now. Check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/Bossypants-Tina-Fey/dp/0316056898/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1512510784&sr=8-1&keywords=tina+fey+bossy

Literally any Harry Potter book

If you haven’t read Harry Potter yet – where have you been? What have you been doing? Go! Go now!! They are the quintessential Christmas books, especially when Harry and company make trips to Hogsmeade. Frankenstein by Mary Shelly

This book is probably one of my favorite books of all time. It’s a great classic book to read if you didn’t have to in high school. Plus, it’s kind of eerie and creepy. The language Shelly uses is beautiful. Check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/Frankenstein-Mary-Wollstonecraft-Shelley/dp/1420951564/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1512510811&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=frankenstein+mary+shelley&psc=1

White Noise by Don DeLillo

During the season of giving, ponder the implications of consumerism and our overly materialistic society with the uplifting book White Noise. I read this book in high school – it’s an eye-opener. It also talks about how much society as a whole is corrupt and doomed – Happy Holidays. Check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/White-Noise-Penguin-Orange-Collection/dp/0143129554/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1512510823&sr=1-1&keywords=white+noise+book

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

SO GOOD. This book moves fast and you won’t want to put it down. It draws you in, and it makes you think. Then, when you’re done, watch the movie. Check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/Girl-Train-Paula-Hawkins/dp/1594634025/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1512510930&sr=1-1&keywords=girl+on+the+train

Books to help your career goals

There are tons of books out there that are specialized to your career goals or hobbies. I like to head to my local library and check out books about journalism or photography. The bigger nonfiction books tend to be more expensive, so checking them out is a great option!
