The Benefits of Eating Algae

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

Algae sounds like the most unappetizing thing to eat, but it turns out it’s like nature’s equivalent to a multi-vitamin! Thank goodness it’s better known as seaweed. I dooo love me some sushi!

Edible algae, or seaweeds, are normally red, green, or brown. They’re rich in amino acids, making them great for vegetarian diets; vitamins, like vitamin A and C; and minerals, like magnesium, calcium, and iron. Seaweed is also rich in iodine, which helps regulate the thyroid (that thing that controls your metabolism).

In addition to offering plenty of good things for your body, they happen to be incredibly low in calories, ranging between 5 to 20 calories depending on the type.

Studies have shown that a healthy diet of seaweed may help prevent cancer, especially breast cancer. Seaweed contains certain compounds that may slow the growth of cancer cells and possibly kill them off entirely.

It has also been found that seaweed helps regulate blood sugar and digestion! What an amazing super food and an excellent excuse to eat more sushi.

Take caution though, collegiettes, when trying new algae. Freshwater algae are usually toxic, causing dehydration and gastrointestinal issues. Yikes!
