6 Non-Candle Options to Keep Your Dorm Smelling Amazing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

One thing that I found to be absolutely essential during my time in my dorm was keeping it smelling amazing. Walking into my room and smelling vanilla, or nutmeg and orange, or the one scent I found that smelled like fruit loops, made my room feel like home. Because candles are not allowed in the dorms I had to find another way to keep my room smelling great. Here are six ideas that I came up with before I moved in to my dorm:

Essential oil diffuser

Essential oil diffusers are a great option to make your dorm smell great. They usually come with many essential oil options so that you can combine them to make your own scents, or use each on their own. Some diffusers even light up to add a little ambience to your room. I combined orange, nutmeg, and clove during the fall and it smelled so good. Near Christmas my roommate and I changed it up and did cinnamon, peppermint, and wintermint. We had a lot of fun picking out the blends based on the season and holiday. Also, during midterms and finals we made stress-relieving blends with eucalyptus and spearmint. There’s a lot of customization that comes with an essential oil diffuser!

Scentsy fragrance flowers

This product doubles as a decoration piece for your dorm room. It’s a white flower in a small vase that is filled with the scent of your choice. The scent comes out of the petals of the flower and lasts for 60 days. Scent options include Aloe Water & Cucumber, Amazon Rain, Black Raspberry Vanilla, Blue Grotto, Go Go Mango, Luna,Pink Cotton, and Seat Salt & Avocado.

Room spray

Room spray is a great option for immediate freshening up of your room or bathroom. It can also be great for keeping your rug (if you have one), closet, and sheets smelling nice. Another plus is that you can probably find any scent you can think of! Room spray is made by so many different brands, which provides a wide range of scents to choose from. It’s also generally inexpensive.

Bath and Body Works has a wide range of room sprays and that’s where I’ve gotten mine from!

Scentsy wall fan diffuser

Another Scentsy option are their wall fan diffusers. These little fans plug into your wall and push scent vapor out into your room. There are three cute design options and are a great reusable option. The wall diffuser is bought separately from the scent pods that you put in it. A great option for changing up the scent every once in a while! The scent pod options are so extensive that I can’t even list them all!

Scent beads for laundry

Smelly laundry = smelly room. Scent beads can be added to your laundry to make your clothes, sheets, and towels smell extra amazing. Almost all laundry detergent brands offer their own versions of scent boosters so there are many options to choose from! One option is Downy Unstoppables. You just shake the bottle, add some beads to the washer drum, and wash!

Wax warmer

Wax warmers add warm light to any room, as well as soft scent. They are a great option for someone who enjoys the ambience of candles. Wax warmers come from many brands and also have a large range of scents to choose from. They also come in pretty much any design any would could want, from unicorns to marble designs.
