When You Are a Non-Girly Girly Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OR State chapter.

In my heart of hearts, I truly wish to be a girly girl. I love the idea of all things girly: dresses, heels, sparkles, lace, grooming, perfume, etc. My Pinterest boards are filled with cute clothes from ModCloth and my youtube is filled with makeup tutorials, but when I try to wear the dresses and put on the makeup, it just doesn’t seem like me.

When you love all things girly, but they just don’t fit your personality, these 8 things are sure to speak to your soul:

1. Make-up.

How? How does it even happen? I wish I could get into makeup and figure out how to do all the things, like contouring and applying lipstick without looking like a crusty clown, but I think I will stick to the concealer, mascara, and the occasional winged liner.

2. Body lotions and potions.

Lotions, Masks, Scrubs… wut? I find a soap that works for my skin and use that. All those fancy scrubs and masks? I don’t have a clue what they mean. Whipped body cream vs. body lotion vs. coconut oil vs. shea butter… I’m confused.

3. Not knowing how to do your hair.

When all you know how to do is up, down, and a bun, looking at hair Pinterest boards is like going to the mall when you are broke: you want but can’t have.

4. All things lacy, pink, and sparkly.

Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the stereotypical girly-girl commodities, but whenever I have them on, they don’t seem like me.

5. Wanting to wear heels, but also loving the security of your flats

You mean those death-traps? Yeah, those. Heels are so stinking cute and I totally would wear them if I wasn’t absolutely terrified of breaking my neck. Yes, practice makes perfect… but my Chuck Taylors are so comfortable… and my vans… and my sandals.

6. Skirts and dresses.

Those only come out when it is laundry day. But even so, I commend the women who make them a staple in their regular wardrobe.

7. When cute underwear is your only saving grace.

It’s like you’re walking around with a secret that nobody else knows (and I love it). My underwear drawer might just be the closest I’ll get to being super girly.

8. Realizing that you are cute AF even without all of those girly things.

You are perfectly imperfect, even if you can’t do fancy fish-tail braids or don’t use luscious body products. Your femininity is your own and you get to define how that looks. Get out there and rock what you’ve got!
