Meet Gabi Perez, this week’s Campus Celebrity and the President of Delta Delta Delta here at Oregon State!

HC at OR State: What is it like being the President of a sorority?

Gabi: It’s fun! And it’s a lot of work, but it’s rewarding because you get a lot of experience that you can use later on in life. Having that leadership experience is really great, but it is definitely stressful and overwhelming at times. You’re the go-to person—you’re the one in charge—for everything! But it’s definitely rewarding.

HC at OR State: What else are you involved with on campus?

Gabi: I’m slated to be the 2015-2016 Panhellenic President, I work on campus at West Service Center, and I’m also a part of the Sing Committee as one of the Community Outreach Chairs.

HC at OR State: What is the toughest part of your job?

Gabi: I would say having to balance the time of being President, a student, and working. It’s a big time commitment, and that’s probably the hardest. If you can’t manage your time well, it’s going to be a really hard job for you to do.

HC at OR State: What is the most gratifying?

Gabi: The most gratifying thing is being able to see the chapter grow. I’ve been President for a year and I’ve grown so much, and the chapter has grown so much too.  As a President you are basically involved in everything, so you have hands-on experience at accomplishing all of the goals we have set as a chapter. For example, I had a hand in helping us achieve our recruitment and academic goals. Because I’m involved in every aspect of the chapter I get to see the results of the chapter’s hard work.

HC at OR State: What are some stereotypes about Greek Life that just aren’t true?

Gabi: I would say there is a stereotype that when people think of sorority girls they think Elle Woods, and it’s not all about pink and fluffy pens and looking cute. There’s a lot more to Greek life than that. We do a lot more than just look cute and do our hair. There’s the philanthropic efforts that we put forth, and on campus, usually the highest GPAs belong to women in sororities.

HC at OR State: What does a day in your life look like?

Gabi: The average day is pretty normal. I have academics and work but I definitely get a ton of emails everyday…I probably get 40-50 emails. Officers and people in the chapter are always texting me so there is definitely a lot of communication throughout the day, but it doesn’t effect my ability to live my life normally.

HC at OR State: What are you planning on doing after you graduate?

Gabi: After graduation, I hope to get a job as a fashion merchandiser. I don’t know where that will take me but I’m very willing to go wherever it does, whether that means moving out of Oregon or not. I would also like to start a family.

HC at OR State: Elle Woods or Sydney White?

Gabi: I would say probably a combination of both. I like pink but… Sydney White is chill.

Look out for the events that Gabi and the chapter of Delta Delta Delta are putting on around campus, and stay tuned for the next Campus Celebrity!
