6 Ways to Be the Best Wing Woman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OR State chapter.

1. Set boundaries

The first thing you should always do before a night out with your girls is setting boundaries. It can be as simple as asking her how late she wants to stay out, to when you should pull her away from that cute guy in the corner.

Setting boundaries makes the night easier for both of you. You won’t feel like you’re ruining your friend’s night by making her leave early, and she won’t get in an uncomfortable situation that you could’ve gotten her out of. Everyone has different ideas about what they want to do when they go out, so make sure your girl doesn’t make a decision she will regret later and set some rules!

2. Talk her up

Tonight isn’t about you; it’s about your friend. Make sure when you’re approaching guys that you start with a little small talk for a few seconds and then immediately introduce your friend so the guy knows who he should be flirting with. If you go on and on about yourself for too long not only will you lead the guy on, but you may also have a pretty upset friend on your hands.

When you introduce your friend say something cool and interesting about her to get a conversation rolling between she and they guy, and then when you see the opportunity make an excuse and give them some space!

3. Check in often

Even though you’re giving your girl some space it’s always a good idea to check in on her throughout the evening. Giving someone space and forgetting that you went out with them are two completely different things. I understand not wanting to get in the way of her flirtation, but you also don’t want to miss her giving you the “get me out of here” look.

4. Know where you are

If you’re planning on wandering around make sure you know how to get home! A mistake a lot of people make is leaving for the night with a set plan of going to a certain place, and then meeting up with friends who want to go somewhere else that you may not have been to before.

If you and your friends are driving to someone’s house make sure you ask where you’re going first and then do a quick Google search of where it is in relation to your house or dorm. If it’s more than a mile away be cautious – you don’t want to get somewhere and not be able to get home later. If anything, make sure you have a friend that can come pick you up!

5. Trust your gut

No matter how good of a time everyone may seem like they’re having, if you get a feeling that something isn’t right or if you feel uncomfortable about something, leave! You may feel like a Debby Downer for a few hours, but the next day when you hear about something bad happening, you and your friend will be glad you got out of there when you did! If your friend doesn’t want to leave, tell her you don’t feel good and need to go home ASAP. Making an excuse as for why you have to leave will be better than sitting uncomfortably for the rest of the night.

6. Stay with her

The most important part of being a good wing woman is staying with her! Even if the night isn’t fantastic for you, think about how happy the night is making her. There are too many cases of a girl leaving her best friend for the night and the next day she’s missing. Don’t be the girl that gets too tired and leaves – and if you do, no matter what take her with you!

Part of being a good Wingwoman is being responsible for the both of you. As boring as the night may be for you, just wait until next weekend when it’s her turn to be your Wingwoman!
