Resolution Revolution!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oneonta chapter.

Now that January’s ending, it’s time for me to examine 2011 so far. This year, I made a lot of resolutions; especially ones to keep me fit and happy. Time for me to share them with you guys!

     1) Eat healthier

Now, I know this is one everyone’s list, but I’m still trying to avoid the “Freshman Fifteen”. One of the ways I’m doing this is by simply incorporating more fruits and vegetables in my diet. For me, that means an apple with my breakfast of healthier options than the chocolate chip pancakes at Hulbert, or my personal favorite- Brain Cafe’s French Toast.
Grabbing a salad at Mills Dining Hall with my friends means fresh lettuce and crisp veggies, as well as steering clear of the Buffalo Chicken pizza and tasty Garlic Knots in the Marketplace. Simply cutting out unhealthy items I can do without, like French fries with every dinner and bacon on the side of my breakfast, I can cut out easy calories.

     2) Drink smarter

I’ve been doing my best lately with substituting the good stuff in, and the bad stuff out. By banning myself from soda with my means, I’ve already managed to lose a few pounds :)
Also, I’ve added lots more water, juice, and milk to my everyday routine so that I can get vitamins and minerals simply by staying hydrated.

     3) Exercise more

This one was a no-brainer for me. After being crippled on the couch for a week after a painful oral surgery, eating nothing but pudding and ice cream, I knew I’d have to get up off my butt as soon as I recovered. With some help from my friends, I’ve been going to the gym in my dorm twice a week, four times if I can manage it.
Even if I only go for half an hour, it’s thirty minutes of burning calories rather than that time being spent on watching a tosh.0 rerun while snacking on pretzels. I balance my time by doing fifteen minutes each of cardio and weights. This helps me feel confident that I’m working all the right muscles. Plus, it’s easier to get motivated when you bring a friend along!

     4) Compliments every day!

In 2011, I’m trying to be a more positive person. A good way for me to do this is to be more outgoing and say things I might normally hold back on. This includes telling a stranger I like her boots, congratulating a classmate on an A-worthy paper, or telling my best friend how great her hair looks today. It puts a smile on someone else’s face, and I know I’ve done something good.

Tips to stick to YOUR resolutions!

  •      Make a checklist so you can see the progress you’re making
  •      Give yourself praise for making improvements in your life
  •      Reward yourself when you achieve a goal– thinking about your upcoming treat will help you stay on track!
