For most college students, freshman year is one of the most bittersweet, yet rewarding years. Before coming to college, I was given lots of pointers and tips from experience as to what I should expect. While this advice helped, these two things were unknown to me until I got a feel for how freshman year actually is.

1. Dorm Life isn’t as Glamorous as it is on Pinterest

Living in a dorm is exciting at first, looking all of the Pinterest dorm inspiration pages consumed my second semester of senior year. When I got to move in, I made sure everything was exactly how I pictured, and for the first week it stayed like that. After a couple months, the cute Pinterest boards and dorm room tours on YouTube seem to be slightly fabricated. Somehow losing things in your dorm becomes the normal, and it starts to look not-so-cute. There will probably be a handful of water bottles hidden under your bed or on your desk.

2. You Aren’t Alone

My first semester of freshman year was one of the toughest, especially being all the way from California. To make it worse, it felt like I was the only one going through a tough time. After talking to other freshman about it, it seemed to be a common theme. Everyone goes through something, whether it be a breakup, homesickness, or just confusion being in a new environment.

Born and raised in California, I am currently a freshman here at OU studying public relations. If I could describe myself in three words they would be smiley, bubbly, and imaginative.
