Campus Celebrity: Kyle Hinchey

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

Sapulpa High graduate and a Multimedia Journalism major, Kyle Hinchey is a senior here at Oklahoma State University. Hinchey is also the Editor in Chief of Ok State’s ever-popular, Daily O’Collegian. Hinchey has a passion for writing and originally wanted to be an author. He got hooked when one of his high school English teachers recommended he join the school newspaper. “Journalism allows me to give my writing purpose – to inform the public,” Hinchey said.

While taking Professor Barbara Allen’s Electronic Communications class, Hinchey was urged to join the O’Colly by Professor Allen herself – in case you didn’t know, she’s also the adviser of the paper. “I’ll always be thankful for that. There wasn’t a better feeling than seeing my name and work published and distributed across campus,” Hinchey said of her encouragement.

A big challenge of the Daily O’Collegian, as well as other newspapers is thriving in the new, digital age. Most students here, and people around the world receive their news online; not by picking up the local newspaper. When I asked Hinchey what his favorite part of the job as Editor in Chief is. His response, “My favorite part about being Editor in Chief is figuring out new ways to help evolve and better the O’Colly.” Although he is most passionate about writing, Hinchey’s job as Editor in chief also has a big business aspect, which he says is the most challenging part. There’s more focus on running the O’Colly administration and managing employee payroll than on writing stories.

Being a freshman, I don’t know much about how the O’Colly is made, but I do read it and I think a lot of people can agree with me when I say Kyle does a great job. I think that shows with his upcoming internship with The Oklahoman this summer. Keep up the good work!
