5 Costumes Already in your Closet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

Halloween is prime time for creativity and dressing up for any girl. But as college students we’re pretty much broke, so that doesn’t leave much room to go all out on an extravagant costume. Believe it or not there are plenty of fun and flirty costumes you can make from items you probably already have in your closet and just a few accessories. Here are a few ideas:

            1. Rosie the Riveter

This is probably the most common, but it can still be a hit if done right. Thanks to the recent popularity in chambray shirts, chances are there is one buried in your closet somewhere. Pair this with jeans or black leggings. For the hair and face all you need is a red bandana and red lipstick to complete the look. Many choose to wear boots with this, but if you’re looking to up the flirtatious factor then throw on a pair of red heels. (Picture taken from Pinterest.)

            2. Spider web

If you want to stick with a more traditional but still creative costume, then dress up as a spider web.  All you need is a black dress and tights, and grab a fake spider web decoration and some plastic spiders from a Halloween store. Stretch and wrap the spider web around your body and stick a few pretend spiders in there to polish it off. Bonus points if you happen to have tights with a spider web pattern to them.             3. Britney Spears

Take it back to the 90s with this costume and copy Britney’s look from the Baby One More Time music video. A black skirt, white button up shirt and grey cardigan are the key pieces for this look. You probably already own these basic items. Now it’s all about wearing them in the right way. Tie the shirt up in a knot in the front to show off a little bit of skin and roll up the sleeves of the cardigan. Style your hair in braided pigtails and with pink hair ties. If you want to go above and beyond, knee high grey socks will complete every last detail of this iconic look. (Picture taken from Pinterest.)

            4. Sailor

This outfit has so many variations that could all accomplish the perfect costume. Stick with the right color palette and pretty much any piece will work. Think blue, white and little pops of red. For instance, a blue skirt with a black and white striped shirt and red shoes nails the basic look of a sailor.  Stop by a costume store to grab a sailor’s hat and necklace with an anchor to complete the costume for cheap. (Picture taken from Pinterest.)

            5. United STATES of America

Group costumes can be made for cheap too. Get all of your girlfriends to each dress up as a different state. Many states have a popular style of dress. For Texas wear some cutoff jean shorts, a plaid shirt and boots. For Alabama a sundress and boots will accomplish that southern style. A form fitting dress that shows off your curves represents New Jersey. Floral beach prints and a lei is perfect for Hawaii. Mardi gras masks for Louisiana, I heart NY t-shirts for New york, raincoats and rainboots for Washington… There are plenty more states out there with well-known styles. Just get with your friends and see what each of you already have in your closet.
