Valentine’s Day Around the World

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

February 14 is the designated day for love. In the United States, couples across the country dress up, make a dinner reservation at a restaurant with a hard to pronounce name and bask in each others’ love.  The U.S. isn’t the only place filled with romantics. People around the globe express their love in a variety of ways. Some are a little more exotic than others.

Japan
Japan spreads the love for two days of the year. On Feb. 14, the country’s women dole out chocolates to their loved ones, not just significant others, and the men do the same on March 14. According to Forbes, on “White Day,” the men give gifts that include not only chocolate, but also more extravagant things like jewelry.

Romania
Romania’s approach to Valentine’s Day is a little different, and magical.  The European country celebrates Dragobete on Feb. 24. The day is special because it marks the time when birds start nesting. Girls make potions from melted snow and accompany the boys in song. (Source: http: www.hopper.com)

The Philippines
The Philippines get all gooey around Valentine’s Day. According to TIME, mass weddings on Feb. 14 are so hot right now.

Italy
Is there any place in this world more romantic than Italy? Romeo and Juliet’s hometown of Verona celebrates V-day with Montague and Capulet themed events, including tours.  There’s probably no better place to be when you’re in love. (Source: www.time.com)
