The Best Movies To Watch During Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

Halloween is a time for trick or treating, going to parties, or staying in and watching a movie. I personally like the last option, because you can sit there with close friends and just watch as many movies as your heart desires. Here are the top 10 movies you should watch during Halloween.

1. Halloweentown

Not all of the movies you have to watch during Halloween have to be scary or spooky, you can incorporate some childhood nostalgia in your watching as well! Halloweentown is one of my favorite movies to just cuddle up on the couch with a bowl of candy ready to watch the whole saga. The whole essence of the movie is pure bliss and you must watch it!

2. us

If you’re looking for a movie that will actually terrify you, that movie would be Us by Jordan Peele. He also made ‘Get Out’ which is also a phenomenal movie. Us is a movie that will seem so realistic in yet such a strange way that you will be sleeping in your parents’ room and running up the stairs when the lights are turned off.

3. halloween

This is a class occult movie that follows the main character, Micheal Myers, around town while he goes on a brutal killing spree. Although it may not be having you jump out of your seats, it still can spook you and also help you slap yourself on the head when the characters make dumb mistakes during a horror movie.

4. Ghost Busters

Another occult classic, Ghostbusters mixes 1980s feel with some good soundtrack songs. This is classic and should be watched every Halloween! In case you don’t know, Ghostbusters follows four scientists who collaborate to help capture all of the ghosts and monsters terrifying New York City.

5. Hocus Pocus

This movie is not necessarily scary, but it is a classic Halloween film that is beloved by many. Hocus Pocus tells the story of three witches who arose from the “dead” and are trying to make the spell that allows them to live forever, which would rein all terror. There are some amazing songs and the costume design is perfect in this movie! Definitely one to watch with the family.

6. The Addams Family

The Addams family are creepy and they’re cooky… like the theme song. This movie has some classic Halloween characters like Wednesday, a little girl who is evil, Uncle Sylvester who is a small pale man in a gray suit, the invisible man, and so many more. This movie will bring you comedy during your movie-watching spree and family joy!

7. Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice…Beetlejuice… I am not going to say it. This movie has the creepy weird Tim Burton vibes mixed with comedy and it is all the good Halloween feelings you want. Classic characters to use for maybe next year’s costume, a thrilling story, and the laughs.

8. Casper

This movie is way too often forgotten about. Casper is such an amazing movie with those feel-good wholesome vibes. You will feel happiness, sadness, and all the emotions in between when watching this movie. Remember to never judge a ghost by its appearance because it can actually be really sweet in the end!

9. Midsommar

Although this movie is set in summer, Midsommar is an amazingly crafted psychological thriller. This A24 film follows Dani who is traveling to Sweden with her boyfriend and friends for the summer. Little do they know, they are getting introduced into a cult for sacrificing or becoming new members, they choose their fate.

10. Candyman

This was the first movie in a while, actually since I have watched Us, that I have genuinely jumped. Although it may seem exaggerated at first and like a classic horror film, if you watch it until the very end, you will see the scariest part, the truth. This movie is beautifully written and directed and will become a staple in film history.
