Make It Happen Monday: Patrick Martin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ODU chapter.

Patrick Martin Jr., a Richmond native is a senior at ODU. He will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Communications in the spring of 2018. Aside from school, the 22 year old is a huge family guy with many hidden talents. One of those talents is his ability to reach all kinds of different people. Through his radio show Make It Happen Monday’s, he is able to show various aspects of himself. The show airs every Monday from 5:30-6:30 pm and you can stream it here and stay in the loop on Twitter or Instagram @MIHMonday.

HC: How’d you get started in radio?

PM: I had a dream, I had a vision. It was something good to add to my resume. Instead of just thinking it was cool, I decided to get the ball rolling.

HC:  Why “Make It Happen Monday?”

PM:  Monday’s the first day of the week, I want to give people something to look forward to. I’m here to uplift and transcend. It’s a mindset for everyone to have all week.

HC:  How long have you had your show?

PM: We’re going on 6 episodes so about 6 weeks.

HC: What do you love most about your job?

PM: I love that even when I’m off the air and walking around campus, people approach and converse with me. I get the chance to motivate them and helping people to aspire more. I also get to build relationships, connections, brand and give a platform for anyone who needs it.

HC:  What are your goals as far as radio, school, and life?

PM: For school, I look forward to graduating in May. After that, I want to begin an organization to give back to the community. I want to keep meeting people and building these connections. For radio, I want to get at least 100 views during one show. I want to implement more sponsors in my show. If I was to die tomorrow I would have wanted to have a beautiful wife, two beautiful kids, and a suburban house. Business wise 6-8 stocks, maybe I’ll open up a gym for after school kids that are less fortunate. I want to provide a healthy and safe environment.

HC: How is WODU allowing you to get closer to your goals?

PM: It’s giving me a chance to create this show, an impact, and do something different. It’s helping me to grow and go after more of what I want.

HC: Where do you see yourself this time next year?

PM: This time next year I see myself in a major city in a small condo with a great paying job that allows me to travel the world. No kids that soon, maybe a beautiful young lady in my life, and investing.

HC: What are the top 3 places you’d like to travel?

PM: Dubai, Rome, and Africa.

HC: How would you describe yourself in 5 words?

PM: Loving, empathetic, motivational, positive, funny.

HC: What made you decide to become an Alpha Phi Alpha man?

PM: I chose Alpha, because of the brotherhood, leadership, and what it means to be an Alpha. The brothers who were on the yard at the time were cool guys and I just connected with them. I didn’t go greek for women or to be cool. I felt that Alpha could not only bring a lot to me, but also I had a lot to offer to the organization as well.

Being able to get to know Patrick Martin was definitely a pleasure. Talking to him came easily and without any hesitation. He is a very kind and down to earth type of guy. Amongst other, he stressed to me that he is very much so a God fearing man that loves his family more than anything else. I believe Patrick will go on to do beautiful things in this world. I for one, wish him nothing but the best.
