Superfoods That Will Take 2016 by Storm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

As the saying goes “out with the old and in with the new,” so move over Kale and Quinoa as we introduce the top predictions of superfood frenzies of 2016.

Avocado Oil

If you thought avocados were a thing of the past you thought wrong. As a major component in our everyday diet, this superfood is not yet ready to shy away from another year in the healthy eating charts.

Despite warnings of their ‘high calorie’ content, we were comforted by the prospect that the avocado is filled with nutrients and ‘good fats.’ So, what the heck! Keep those deliciously green ovals coming!

Things appear to take a slight U-Turn for the avocado in 2016 as we introduce a new form of the solid food; avocado oil.

Produced from the fleshy green insides of the avocado, this oil is set to be the new coconut oil. Containing anti-oxidants and packed with minerals, avocado oil is just as versatile as our trusty coconut oil (even skin care range Khiel’s are using it in their moisturiser!).

It can be used to cook food in (step aside fry-light), for seasoning, used as a spread for your toast and even acts as a wondrous extract in shampoo and conditioner for hair as healthy as your growing avocado heart!

Coconut Flour

Although the avocado may have overtaken the coconut in some respects, it is inevitable that we can’t get enough of ‘coco-nutty’ goodness and so 2016 presents us with coconut flour.

High in fibre and healthy fats, coconut flour is free from wheat and so makes for the perfect companion for all your baking necessities.

Added bonus: low sugar and calorie content making this coconut component both healthy and easily digestible!

Seaweed

Cast your mind to the salty, dry, crunchy, green nest otherwise recognisable in the form of a small plastic delivery container. 2016 sees the rise of the naturally green, nutritious plant enriched with minerals from the ocean.

As an infamous green salad vegetable, seaweed could quite potentially be this years replacement for kale.

Seaweed is one of the most densely nutritious plants on the planet and just a little of this superfood will send you a long way! Beneficial for boosting weight-loss, seaweed is rich with chlorophyll, which acts as a natural detoxifier to draw out waste and its high iodine levels help to maintain a healthy metabolism.

Cauliflower over Carbs

Goodbye carbs, and hello cauliflower! (and well, all other vegetables). Forget pasta and pizza, its all about ‘courgetti’ (courgette spaghetti) and cauliflower crust.

So it may not be your usual binge-eating dominoes, but you can’t knock it till you try it! With the uproar of must-have culinary tool ‘spiralizi’, you too can be trading your carbs for courgettes. Why not take a look at some new vegetable based recipes, like these deliciously healthy looking Cauliflower Nachos:

‘Pour-Over Coffee’

Ok, so not exactly a superfood, but definitely one for you coffee lovers who need to ditch the mid-morning Starbucks splurge!

That’s right, you heard it here first. 2016 promises the rise in home-brewing coffee, or otherwise known ‘pour-over coffee.’

Although potentially more time consuming than your average kettle boil or queue time in Costa, the simplest way to create your own pour-over brewing simply involves pouring water over your coffee ground to extract that delightfully rich caffeinated goodness, simple!
