The Super Bowl: Was it Worth the Hype?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

For the past couple of years, I have suffered staying up late to watch the Super Bowl and complained about how it’s so unfair that we had to stay awake until two in the morning to watch the game. So, this year, finally able to actually watch the game in real time, I was excited to see whether it was really worth all the hype. Overall, I can’t say that it was. Maybe my expectations were too high, but let’s have a look at why the Super Bowl isn’t at all what it’s cut out to be…

1. The Actual Game

Guaranteed, this was always going to be my least favourite part. I’m not a big fan of American football and so my knowledge was limited. The Carolina Panthers, however, are one of the teams I actually know, so I was rooting for them to win. Obviously they lost – because that’s just my luck – but it was fun to see the Americans here actually talking about the game – touchdowns, Manning, Newton. Although them trying to explain the game to us probably made it harder to understand because we were listening to them talk rather than actually watching it! 2. The Half-Time Show

Coldplay, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars – what more could you ask for? There’s been a lot of praise and controversy over the half-time show this year. Coldplay was, without a doubt, overshadowed by the performances of Queen B and Bruno, but it was nice to see that Coldplay stuck to their style. It’s just that for a show that’s meant to get the crowd pumped for the second half of the game, Coldplay’s performance was comparably forgettable to the other two performers. Excerpts of the performances online practically cut out all of Coldplay’s bits, fore-fronting both Bruno Mars and Beyoncé instead. And to be fair, who else could perform a brand new song, announce a world tour, and give a political message in a platform like the Super Bowl and still get that amount of praise? As always, this was the one part that I actually really enjoyed!

3. The Adverts

This was probably the element I was the most excited for! Back in the UK, we miss all the amazing adverts that companies put together especially for the game, and this year was no different, although it must be said that the adverts were definitely a little weirder this year. The Doritos advert was the most shared of the group, and was also one of the most controversial adverts. It was humorous, but did they take it too far? The main debate has been on its ‘portrayal’ of abortion, with both sides criticising the advert. What do you think? Was the advert too much? Plus, watching the new adverts and new trailers are exciting in theory, but when you’re bombarded with them every two minutes it kind of loses its effect and becomes annoying! See the controversial advert below…
