We’re all missing home a little, no matter how much we love Nottingham and our housemates here. Will we ever grow out of just needing a hug from a parent, or a night out with our best friend? Who knows. In the meantime, here are a few tips for overcoming home-sickness.
Family
Okay, an obvious one. Missing your family a little bit is, even if you don’t want to admit it, just a part of uni life. The beauty of the 21st century, however, is that you can solve this problem easily, quickly and for free! Setting your family up with Skype means you can see and speak to your loved ones as often as possible. And, as it is completely free, you can spend a whole evening or watch a film with them whenever you miss them.
Roast Dinners
With the possible exception of the group Christmas meal, students will never cook a proper, all trimmings included, roast dinner. Just the thought of having one will have most of us contemplating going home for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. Luckily for us at Nottingham, there is a Toby Carvery within walking distance from uni campus, and at £6.99 for a 2 course meal, why can’t we go every week?
Bath
Who doesn’t want to take advantage of all the new Lush bath bombs? Baths are a great way to de-stress after a long day of assignments or lectures… or just being awake for more than 8 consecutive hours. A few of the lucky ones may have a bath in their student homes, but for those of us who don’t, you’d better make really good friends with someone who does! Or, if your shower is anything like mine, it’s so blocked you basically end up having a little bath anyway (side note: buster drain unblocker from any main supermarkets does a great job).
Pets
As much as they annoy you by leaving hair all over your clothes when you’re at home, being away from your family pets can be difficult when all you want to is a cuddle with someone who won’t answer back. Rumours are though that Nottingham Trent’s student union has a room full of puppies for de-stressing. Even better, all donations go straight to the Guide Dog’s charity. Fancy going undercover as a Trent student, anyone?
