Every month I’ll be giving you a list of places to go and things to do in Nottingham, but these aren’t just any things. No: these are good things, great things one might say. Things like raising money for charity by going to the Hockley Hustle music night, getting a vanilla bean latte from Cappuchaino instead of Costa or even cancelling a date with Facebook to spend an evening learning First Aid.  Seriously good stuff.

Good Shop of the month: Out of this world

If you have always eaten ethically or want to try to it now you have to buy your own food, have a gander at Out of this world. It is a great little shop that sells fair trade, organic, eco-friendly and local food and beauty products. They also sell lots of stuff suitable for people with dietary requirements.

Good Café/Restaurant of the month: Cappuchaino

This café isn’t any old Starbucks. Using coffee roasted in Nottingham and serving only ethically sourced and Rainforest Alliance approved tea; Cappuchaino is the epitome of an ethical café. They cater to a wide range of food requirements and they give a 10% student discount! You know where to find me.

Every day! Trent to Trenches Exhibition

Marking 100 years from the start of World War One, this exhibition (and the many other events in the Trent to Trenches programme) explores how Nottingham and the people living here were affected by World War One.

October 4th: A free lunch!

The city council is giving 5000 people a free lunch, using food that would have otherwise been wasted to highlight waste in the growth, marketing, sale and consumption of food. There will be street entertainment and cookery demonstrations with local food stands and organisations present.

Old Market Square 12pm-5pm

October 6th: Volunteer for the Teenage Cancer Trust

The Teenage Cancer Trust aims to improve the prognosis and quality of life for cancer sufferers aged between 13 and 24. They are running a number of events at the Victoria Centre over the next few weeks and need volunteers. You can sign up through the Nottingham SU website linked below.

October 8th: SB Farmer’s Market

Get the hopper bus down to SB for their award winning Farmer’s Market! They sell organic and seasonal produce from local areas and have enough food and drink for you to gorge yourself until Christmas. Luckily it happens the first Wednesday of every month so there’s nothing to stop you doing exactly that.

11.30-3pm

October 10th: World Mental Health Day

Have a tea and a talk in the Institute of Mental Health building on Jubilee Campus to help raise funds for the National Mental Health Foundation. Tea, coffee and an array of home-made cakes will be available.

C Floor, IMH building, Jubilee Campus 10am – 12pm

October 11th: Run or Dye race

Join me at one of the coolest races in town throwing paint at the runners of the Run or Dye 5k. Better and fitter people than myself, though, can still sign up to actually run it and raise money for a good cause.

October 19th: Hockley Hustle

More than 400 artists and bands will be taking over more than 40 venues around the city. Tickets are £10 in advance and get you into everything with all the money from ticket sales going to local charities.

October 20th: Eat curry and prevent crime

An on-campus halls event with free curry. They know what we want.

October 29th: Learn to save a life

Learn emergency first aid classes on campus. There isn’t anything that is better than saving someone’s life. Not even Tom Hiddleston, although if he needed CPR…

Training room, Portland Building, University Park Campus. 5.30-9pm

I'm a fourth year at the University of Nottingham and I never want to leave. I blog about easy ways to make a difference in our world and to our community and I spend most of my life online. When the wifi is down though I love to bake, play with dogs, go exploring, maybe do some coursework and (pretend that I can) sing and dance.
