10 Things Louise Rennison Taught Teenage Girls of the Noughties

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Following the recent death of author Louise Rennison, creator of the 14-year old protagonist Georgia Nicolson in the popular series: Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging, it seems only fair to celebrate the authors life through reflecting and thanking her for all the wisdom she imposed on almost every teenage girl of the 2000’s.

1.     ‘Boys don’t rate girls for funniness’

A slightly controversial life lesson as provided to us by Georgia’s blonde gal pal Rosie, of course when fancy dress parties come into play, dressing as an olive may be not be the wisest of choices but overall Rennison taught us that personality overrides beauty almost all the time. I mean, how else did Georgia Nicolson win over an absolute ‘worldie’ like Robbie?

2. Never shave your eyebrows

Proof that the ‘strong eyebrow’ game dates way back before Cara Delevingne and the Kardashians. Louise Rennison warns us away from the razor and highlights the importance of having our eyebrows ‘on fleek’ and opting for a more traditional beauty regime of waxing, tweezing and threading.

3. Never ask your friends to rate your attractiveness (unless you’re prepared for a self deprecating ritual)

Unless you were prepared for the worst, Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging taught us to NEVER undertake the attractiveness test. We all felt the pain Georgia went through when rated a 4 for her nose.

4. The pencil test is a completely accurate, cheaper and less embarrassing way of determining your bra size.

Forget the awkward trips to La Senza or M&S with your mum, finding the perfect bra size was so much easier defined in the comfort of your own bedroom with a pencil to hand. If the pencil could be held by the cleavage, you knew to wear bra, if it didn’t, you knew to wait a few years…

5. When applying fake tan ALWAYS read the label

A bit of a no-brainer, but we’ve all been there. Choosing the correct shade and brand is always a trial and error process but Rennison’s protagonist taught us to at least do it in advance of all future plans and commitments and not hours before our first date to the local swimming pool with our younger sister and hopeful boyfriend-to-be.

6. A girl group can simply not exist without a code

Your friendship group truly had no ‘squad goals’ without a secret password, handshake or to the extremes of Nicolson’s girls, a friendship dance.

7. The ‘snogging’ scale

Although we will never admit it, the snogging scale truly helped us to understand the different stages of the physical, sexual relationship. It also made us question the achievability of number 4… (a kiss lasting over 3 minutes without breathing.. who are these people, goldfish???)

8. Owning a pet automatically makes you 98% more relatable to the opposite sex

Whether it be a hamster, rabbit, cat or dog, owning a pet always got you brownie points from your crush. Other than having your pet as your every screen saver and desktop picture, how else were you to show-off your soft, caring, wife material, maternal personal qualities?

9. Ditch the ‘boy entrancers’ if you cannot apply them properly

Unless you were wizard with eyelash glue and tweezers, it was probably always best to step away from the fake eyelashes for the 13th birthday disco’s. Reading about Georgia’s falling half way down her face only to touch the nose of her crush was enough o put most teenage girls off wearing the spider-legged lashes for life.

10. Mum knows best.. ALWAYS

Although we may not have realised it at the time, as young adults flown from the nest forced to fend for ourselves, it is a universal truth that your mum knows best and always will do. Whether it be about boys, fake tan, separating your whites from your colours or knowing how to host a good party, your mum is and will always be your best and closest friend.
