What Your Study Soundtrack Says About You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

As I walked past my friends’ room earlier this semester, I noticed that songs from the Rudy soundtrack were emanating through their door. Later, when I asked them about this, they informed me that the soundtrack from Rudy is their go-to study playlist. Naturally, I proceeded to ask them why they chose this.

“First of all, I think it’s very soothing. It is great to do work to. But more importantly, it reminds me of where I am and how hard I worked to get here”, replied Kathleen Conaty. Her twin sister Clare shared that, “It is my favorite movie, and it just makes me happy. It reminds me of how lucky I am to be here at the school of my dreams.”

Every student has a certain set of music that motivates them to be the best that they can be. Whether you like to crank out your homework to rap music or classical piano, your study playlist says a lot about who you are as a person. Read on to find out what your study genre says about you, as well as some suggestions to add to your own personal playlist.

Rap

If you study best when you have the verses of Kanye West and Macklemore pounding into your ears, then you like to be consistently motivated while you grind through your work. Listening to rap can be extremely empowering, and can give you the sense of strength you need to get through your extensive workload. While some people may find rap distracting and overpowering, I’ve found that the rhythmic beat can keep you totally focused and completely on task. If rap is the genre for you, I suggest adding Lose Yourself by Eminem to your playlist. Check it out below:

Pop

If catchy pop music is your favorite, then you live for the weekends, and listening to party music keeps your energy high and provides a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel. If you’re all about the pop music, I suggest adding Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off to your playlist. This song will help you keep your positive momentum going and prevent stress from destroying your good mood.

Classical

If classical music is the only background noise that you can tolerate as you work through a paper or prepare for an exam, then nothing can deter you from your academic focus. Classical music can definitely set the stage for a super productive and distraction-free study session. If you’re looking for some classical music to keep you on task, check out Con te Partiro by Andrea Bocelli. This music will undoubtedly help you maintain your focus during even the most exhausting of assignments.

Country

If country music is the genre for you, then you strive to stay upbeat and enthusiastic while you complete your work. Country music has a way of sounding like summer, and can take you back to great times with great people. If listening to country is what gets you through late nights at the library, I suggest adding Dirt by Florida Georgia Line to your playlist.
