Summer’s Hottest App: VSCOcam

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

“I’m going to put that on my VSCO®!” is a phrase you may have begun to hear in recent months and it has probably left you wondering what the heck is a VSCO® and how do you even spell that? You may have also seen an odd looking URL in your friends’ Instagram bios. VSCO® (pronounced vis-co by most collegiettes) is a photo editing and sharing app similar to Instagram, but don’t confuse the etiquette of the two!

Instagram is great. It allows you to share cool pictures, follow your friends, and let people know you “like” their photos. However, Instagram also has the ability to leave collegiettes stressed out about “like” counts, following/follower ratios, double posts, and so much more. These so-called popularity indicators have damaged the user experience of Instagram; now, cue VSCO®. VSCO® is etiquette free, popularity indicator free, and thus, so much more fun!

According to the company’s site, “VSCO® is an art and technology company empowering people everywhere to create, discover, and connect. Our goal is to honor art and artist while fueling a worldwide creative movement through innovative tools and experimental projects.” VSCO® was founded in 2011 and has since released film and app products. The app VSCO® Cam is what’s hot right now for collegiettes and I’m here to tell you how it works.

The Library

The Library holds all your photos. You can take photos directly from the VSCO® camera or you can upload photos to your library. From the library, you can select a photo to edit and you will be given unlimited tools and filters to do so. Once you are pleased with your edited photo, you simply click the upwards arrow button to share your photo to your grid, camera roll, e-mail, or any other social media platform.

The Grid

A VSCO® Grid is like your own personal Tumblr. Imagine the beautiful layout of your Tumblr blog, but instead of reblogging other people’s photos, you get to show off your own! Set against a white background, your collage of photos looks both fun and sophisticated. And don’t be nervous about what you can/should post to your Grid. There are no rules! Post as many times a day as you want, post a selfie, post a picture of your dog, post a nature landscape, post a picture with your friends before a night-out. Seriously, post whatever you want and enjoy the stress-free environment of your VSCO® Grid.

The Feed

Your VSCO® Feed is a dashboard of new posts by those you chose to follow. Like Instagram, VSCO® allows you to follow other users. However, VSCO® does not notify you if someone has followed you or display your follower count anywhere on your profile. VSCO® has kept the best aspects of following and taken away the stress.

VSCO® is fun and easy to navigate. Collegiettes, enjoy the freedom of this new app and happy posting!

Notre Dame

Hey, my name is Grace and I'm an incoming freshman at Notre Dame with an intent to study marketing, design, and journalism. I'm from Wayne, Pa (a suburb of Philadelphia), but I love traveling and am so excited for my next destination: South Bend, Indiana. I spend most of my time hanging out with my friends, reading, playing field hockey, online-shopping, and binge-watching Netflix documentaries. I love to write and am so happy to join the HCND family!
