Stylize and Maximize your Space

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Back to school means back to either a cramped dorm room, or a sparse new apartment or house. So how can a girl warm up the place without feeling crowded? The key is to be creative with your organization and decorations.

Temporary Wallpaper

If you’re an older building, your walls are probably a little grungy. Try putting up temporary wallpaper to hide the imperfections and brighten up your room. Even just doing one wall can add a lot.  Tempaper has tons of cute designs. They also have something called “Tempaper by you,” which allows you to hang the paper on your walls and then draw or paint on it your self so you can create a custom look.

Calendars

Put old calendars to good use, or buy a new one with photos that you like. Instead of using it as an actual calendar, take it apart and use the photographs or drawings as decorations. Frame them or leave them bare and get new ones every year.

DIY Frames

Pick out some colorful masking tape and use it to hang photos on your walls like frames. This is cute, and much cheaper than buying an actual frame!

Make a Paper Chain

Remember in grade school when we would loop scraps of construction paper together into a long chain? Take it a step further by cutting up some fun scrapbooking paper, or even wrapping paper, and looping it together. Frame your door with it or hang it around the edge of your room.

Curtains

Get a tension rod and a cute curtain to put in front of your wardrobe. It will protect your clothes, and it adds something unique to your room.  You can do the same for your window too. Take down the curtains that come with your room and tuck them away until the end of the year. Replace them with your own for a personal touch!

Tiny 3M Hooks

Use these to hang up jewelry either from your wall or the side of your wardrobe. This way your necklaces won’t get tangled together, and they are much easier to see. You can also use a corkboard and thumbtacks to get the same result.

Elfa

The Container Store carries a line called Elfa, which allows you to customize simple shelving/drawer units. You can choose from a variety of sizes, colors, and materials and build the piece online. There are also a ton of extras you can add to it, like a top or hooks to hang things from.  Once you’re done building, they’ll send you the pieces to put together. Don’t worry though, it’s super easy and all you need is a rubber mallet, which they will include. I put mine together in about 15 minutes, no problem!
