The Skinny on Teatoxes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Everyone’s heard of juice cleanses, but now celebs like Kendall Jenner are glorifying a new way to cleanse: teatoxes. Tea, of course, has been praised for its many health benefits such as lower risk of stroke and heart disease, lower blood pressure, increased mental alertness, boost energy, keep weight down, and even possibly help to prevent cancer and other chronic diseases as it is chock full of antioxidants that work to reduce oxidative stress and free radicals in the body.

So, are there benefits beyond those offered by tradition tea in detox teas? There is no concrete science to back what these teas claim to do. Detox teas are marketed as a dietary supplement and, thus, are not held to liable to prove the things claimed on the label. It is important to be aware of the interactions between the detox teas and any other supplements or medications you may be taking, as the teatox could alter the absorption (& therefore the effectiveness) of the medication. Ingredients such as lemongrass, ginger, dandelion, and milk thistle all promote healyhu liver. Disclaimer: watch out gor the herbal laxative senna, if it’s in the tea – don’t make this your habitual cup because you cannot take it too long!

There are two different types of teatoxes: the start-and-stop style teatox and those you incorporate into your diet long term.

From the Beach to the Bend! I am a Junior Political Science major at the University of Notre Dame originally from Laguna Beach, CA (...yes, like the show). I am minoring in Constitutional Studies and Energy Studies, both of which are much more exciting than they sound I promise! In typical California style, I am obsessed with fish tacos and all things eco-chic! And I am constantly dancing or choreographing in my head!
