Shine Bright Like a Diamond

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Shine bright like a diamond is a term originates with the woman who embodies it the most, Rihanna. She has become a music, makeup and fashion icon. Rihanna’s business ventures vary but one thing remains certain through all of them: she is committed to helping all women. She uses her background and upbringing to bring joy and confidence to millions of women who buy her products. Here is a profile on Rihanna so that we can all appreciate her more than we already do.

Rihanna is the stage name for Robyn Rihanna Fenty who was born in February of 1988. She was born on the island nation of Barbados and is of Afro-Barbadian, Afro-Guyanesse and Irish descent. Being raised around music, clothes and makeup has led Rihanna to become a businesswoman, fashion designer, actress and philanthropist. She currently is on Forbes’ list of the highest-paid entertainers in the world for 2019 at thirty-sixth place. She is a phenomenal businesswoman, and her products are an integral part of the lives of people.

Rihanna’s beginnings in the pop-culture industry came from music. In 2003, when producers Evan Rogers and Carl Strucken were on vacation, she blew them away with her talents. She was fifteen at the time, but that did not stop Rihanna from dazzling the producers and starting her career. She impressed them so much that she caught the eyes of Def Jam Recordings and rapper Jay-Z. With more auditions and the continuing promise of her vocal skills, Rihanna was moved to the United States from Barbados in order to officially begin her journey in the music industry. She is the youngest solo artist to have fourteen no. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Rihanna’s songs have been a great success and she has sold more than 54 million albums and 210 million tracks worldwide. Rihanna is currently the best-selling digital artist of all time because she has more than 100 million gold and platinum song certifications. Her songs have us speechless and continuously find their way to the top of the charts. Rihanna is now on the Mainstream Top 40 list for artists of the past twenty years by Billboard.  She has amassed such a large following from her music, but being the icon she is, Rihanna did not stop there.

Rihanna ventured into makeup during 2017 when she opened Fenty Beauty. She produces everything from foundations to lip glosses and even highlighters. The most important part of Fenty is that it aims to help women with all skin tones, textures and types. The range of skin colors that Fenty’s collections accommodate led to the accolade of one of “The 25 Best Inventions of 2017” by Time Magazine. She created Fenty Beauty “so that women everywhere would be included.” Rihanna’s inspiration, drive and passion for makeup come from her mother. The Fenty Beauty line has brought confidence for women of all skin tones. Prior to Fenty, it was hard for women of color to find shades that matched their skin. Rihanna has become the highlight (pun intended) of the experiences people have with makeup by creating such amazing products.

After her run at music, acting and makeup, Rihanna has now turned to creating lingerie. The need for high quality and decently priced lingerie has been around for a while but has definitely spiked since the new wave of the women’s movement. Women want to feel empowered, which starts with their clothes. For me personally, I get such a confidence boost when I have on a new or cute outfit. She launched her line, Savage x Fenty, on May 11. During her lingerie fashion show in early September, Rihanna commented on her line and said, “We want to make people look good and feel good.” This is exactly what she did because her product line includes lingerie for women of all shapes and sizes. Rihanna carried over her diverse outreach from her Fenty Beauty line; the sizes of the products go from XS to 3X so women of all sizes are able to enjoy Savage X Fenty. Not only is her lingerie line fit for a wide array of women, but it is also well-priced, which makes it accessible by people of all socioeconomic backgrounds as well.

Rihanna is an icon because of two reasons. First, she started her career at fifteen and has been broadening her empire since then. Second, she keeps the average person in mind when she writes songs, creates makeup and designs lingerie. Rihanna goes out of her way to make everyone feel included and empowered. She not only shines, but Rihanna gives us the light so we can shine like diamonds too.
