Revisiting Your Middle School Wardrobe: Do’s and Definite Don’ts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

The 2000’s were a trying time for fashion. We know this. Middle and high school hallways were flooded with all sorts of …”trends.” Some were acceptable. Most weren’t. BUT there are a few classic 2000’s pieces making quite the comeback – and I have conveniently sorted out the best and the worst of middle school fashion to make sure you know right from wrong this fall. Let’s take a look:

Trends that died and should stay buried:

Ponchos

Don’t lie. You know you had at least one of these in middle school. And you loved it. While I was a huge fan of them back then, I really hope these don’t rise from the grave anytime soon. I mean, go ahead be a cute vampire/ skeleton/ night creature for Halloween. But don’t wear a poncho.

I, for one, was never able to master the pouf. Back in the day, I envied those who did. Now — not so much.Thankfully we have moved past this tiny pouf at the top of the head and upgraded to more sophisticated ways to style our ponytails.

Juicy Couture

I’m not sure who decided it was okay to print the word “Juicy” on the butt of track pants, but whoever did gave guys everywhere the perfect excuse to stare at girls’ rear ends encased in velour. Velour.

The pieces to pull out of your closet:

Juicy Couture

Juicy Couture is more than terry cloth hoodies! As a loyal Juicy customer, I would just like to say that they have some really cute pieces. As long as you stay away from the “track” section, most of their clothes are really fashionable. Take this dress for example.  Their stuff can be pricey, but they have tons of sales, and their clothes always holdup.

White sneakers

I’ve been seeing more and more of these simple shoes lately. Not only are they in style, but also they are also comfortable. Wear them with skinny jeans and a cute top (or even a hoody) for a casual in-class look.  Superga makes a few great pairs that hold up really well if you’re careful not to get them too muddy.

Denim shirts

Thankfully, today’s denim shirts are more put together and less grunge than they were in the past. Trying wearing one with forest green or deep red pants and boots for a cute fall look. But please, whatever you do, just don’t wear matching jeans.
