A Review of Katy Perry’s Super Bowl Halftime Performance

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

The Super Bowl. A day full of football, food, and fun. Whether you were rooting for the Patriots or the Seahawks, or you were just in it for the game day snacks (I may have fallen under this category), anyone could agree that the one of the most talked about events of the night – besides the game of course – is the halftime show.

When Katy Perry was announced as this year’s performer, I couldn’t help but be a little skeptical. She had some pretty big shoes to fill from past acts, like Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2014 and Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child in 2013.

However, Katy Perry really stepped up to the plate this year, and her performance was seen by 118.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched halftime show in Super Bowl history. That number beat Bruno Mars’ show last year by 3.2 million viewers!

Katy Perry’s performance was strong and visually spectacular. The addition of guests Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot certainly improved the show as a whole. Here are some of my favorite moments.

The giant lion

Holy moly, I’ve never seen anyone look that fierce while riding a giant red-eyed feline before. It certainly set the bar high for the show.

Still can’t get over her fierceness

Her runway strut was on point and I cannot stop thinking about how cool the costumes of the chess pieces are. Where can I get one?

Lenny Kravitz channels his inner Cinna

Please tell me someone else noticed the connection of fire in this set and the inclusion of Lenny Kravitz – also known as the man who played beloved and kind-hearted Cinna from the Hunger Games Series? Katy Perry is basically the pop star version of The Girl on Fire. The flame shooters and her fiery mini dress only support my argument. Whether or not this was a conscious choice, I thought it was brilliant. Plus, I hope I’m as cool as Lenny when I’m fifty years old.

Bring out the dancing sharks!

Dancing marine life was the perfect addition to Perry’s “California Gurls” performance. I think I was more enthralled with the sharks than Katy herself (although she did look amazing in her colorful beach umbrella ensemble). Where can I get a job like that? I know what I want to be for Halloween 2015.

But really…

I think that shark learned his smooth moves from me…

Those swimsuits though…

Someone needs to let me know where I can get a swimsuit like Katy’s backup dancers because OH MY GOODNESS THEY ARE FLAWLESS.

Missy Elliot’s rockin’ performance of “Lose Control”

I’m going to skip over Katy Perry’s awkward dancing to the part when Missy Elliot basically stole the show. “Lose Control” will forever be one of my favorite songs from my middle school days. I couldn’t help but dance along with Missy, who looked amazing with her long hair and unique jumpsuit.

Katy, we still love you, don’t worry.

When Katy took flight I was speechless…

All I could think about was how scared I would be if I was lifted into the air without much as a visible harness to ensure my safety. I have no doubt that Katy was in good hands, and she looked completely un-phased by being hundreds of feet above the ground.

Overall, Katy’s halftime show performance lived up to my expectations and will no doubt be a tough act to follow next year.
