How To Keep Up With Your High School Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Who says the only long distance relationship you’re in is with your boyfriend? With the many changes in our lives, it’s often difficult to keep up with all the relationships that were once so very important to us. However, just because you have a new life and a new set of friends, that doesn’t mean that you must abandon your old ones. Here are some simple ways that you can keep your friendship alive and your best friend always at your side.

1. Skype Dates

Taking time to schedule Skype dates is one little thing you can do that will make all the difference. The fact that you are taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down, face to face with your friend will mean the world to her and you’ll no longer feel so very far apart. My best friend and I attempt to schedule Skype dates at least once a month, except, of course, in cases of pure emergency when nothing but seeing her face will do. This allows us to spend real time with one another and ensure that no outside distractions will affect our friend time. Plus, it is always good to stay updated on your friend’s newest looks to avoid expressions of complete shock when you meet in person.

2. Phone calls

Whether you’re walking back to your dorm from class or taking a short trip to LaFun, there is always a little free time in your day where you can give your best friend a call. There’s no need to have long, drawn out conversations (though those are great too); a five minute call will update them on your day and show them that you care. There’s always something throughout that day that I realize only my best friend would understand, and I am sure I’m not the only one. So, don’t just let those thoughts pass – give her a call.  She’ll appreciate the sentiment and enjoy the fact that even though your miles away, she still manages to be part of your day. Plus, hearing your friend’s voice every once in a while will make you feel not only a little closer to her, but closer to home as well.

3. Trips

Do you know your best friend’s semester schedule? If not, it is definitely something to take into account. Oftentimes friends are lucky enough to have overlapping breaks throughout the year and whether you both are going home for the holidays or planning on some other exotic expedition, it’s important to know how much time you actually have to spend together. With the right amount of time and planning, it is possible to integrate your long distance best friend into your college experience, creating new memories that will last a lifetime.

Though these tips seem so very simple, it is incredibly easy to get lost in the excitement of your new life and forget about the one you left behind. However, it’s important to make time for those you love whether they are near or far. So take this time to call your best friend, send her a quick text, a cute Snapchat, or a funny video – just let her know that you care.
