Let’s face it: It’s hard to find time to read non class-related books during the semester – even if you consider yourself a giant book worm. Luckily, Fall break is quickly approaching and we’ll get some much-needed relaxation time. If you’re anything like me, one of the first trips you’ll make is to Barnes & Noble (or your local independent bookstore #SupportIndieBookSellers). One of the best parts of a bookstore visit is the time spent perusing, but, sometimes, there’s no time for that. So, if you’re looking for some reading recs, here are some books to consider:

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Many people have watched (and adored!) the Netflix film, but I’ve found that most have not read the book. If you’re in this boat, or have not heard of either the movie or book, get reading ASAP! TATBILB protagonist, Lara Jean, is a huge romantic; despite never having been in a relationship, she pours her heart out in love letters to all the boys she’s loved: five in total. One day, the letters are sent out and Lara Jean’s life turns upside down because – one of those boys? – is her sister’s ex-boyfriend. Desperate, she embarks on a fake dating scheme with one of the other letter recipients, Peter Kavinsky, a popular jock who’s totally out of her league… Endless cute shenanigans ensue.

Warcross by Marie Lu

Warcross is not just a game, but rather, a way of life, or, more accurately a way to escape life. To make ends meet, Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, hacking into the virtual reality game in order to track down players that illegally bet on the game. One day, her seemingly harmless hacking glitches her into the game, the international Warcross championships, no less, and she becomes a worldwide sensation overnight. Instead of being penalized, Emika is invited by the game’s creator to spy on this year’s tournament to monitor a security problem in the game’s software. Though, at first she is thrust into a world of opulence and glamour, her investigation soon uncovers a malevolent plot that could threaten the lives of all Warcross players.

Save the Date by Morgan Matson

If you’re looking for a feel-good rom-com with a Cheaper by the Dozen vibe, search no further. Charlie Grant is the youngest of five and she’s eager for her entire family to be back home for a special occasion: her older sister’s wedding. The weekend is supposed to be absolutely perfect, but, of course, from almost the first moment, disaster is in the air. With a wedding planner gone rogue, family tensions surfacing, and the reappearance of an old crush, will Charlie be able to salvage the weekend she so highly anticipated?

There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins

The month of October is basically dedicated to the celebration of Halloween and all things spooky. Accordingly, we had to include a thriller. Makani Young moved to Nebraska in order to leave behind her dark past. But, a gruesome murder – that turns into a string of murders – shakes the whole town, transforming her supposed safe haven into something straight out of a Slasher flick. Stephanie Perkins, whom you might recognize as the author of Anna and the French Kiss, has mastered horror and delivers on all fronts: a gripping mystery, a steamy romance, and a goosebump-raising set of  murders that’ll leave you wanting to keep the lights on, long after you’ve stopped reading.

You Play the Girl by Carina Chocano

If you’re not into fiction, we’ve got you covered. In You Play the Girl, former movie critic Chocano provides an insightful analysis of society’s construction of the ideal girl and what that means for real young women. The book consists of a series of essays incorporating Chocano’s own experiences with a scrutiny of popular media that is a tad infuriating but ultimately empowering. We highly recommend this one, especially to any fans of Roxane Gay.

Fall break is the perfect time to unwind with a good book and a cup of tea. We hope one of these books makes your TBR!
