What A Girl Wants: The Physical Factors and Personality Traits Most Desired

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

After the enormous success of my last article on falling for the same type of guy, I decided to survey Northwestern girls for the most dream-worthy factors in guys on campus. What would Mr. Perfect look and act like? These were the results out of 73 responses for the type of man a girl wants at Northwestern.

1. Hair Color
Whoever said blondes have more fun must not be at Northwestern. An overwhelming 72.6% of respondents preferred brunette guys. Blonde guys ranked next, and redheads fell short of what girls were looking for. However, 13% of girls said that hair color wasn’t a major factor for their type.

2. Eye Color
Girls seem to fall for those baby blue eyes. There was almost a tie between blue eyes and not having a specific preference for eye color though. Green eyes were the next color preferred, and brown/hazel eyes had the least amount of votes.

3. Body Size
Romance novels may show the ripped guys with bulging muscles winning the heroine’s heart, but Northwestern girls simply want their guys toned. 72.6% of participants said they just want a toned guy, and more girls prefer skinny guys to super muscular guys. Just as many girls prefer super muscular guys as they prefer guys that never worked out, so there’s hope for the lazy college boys out there after all!

4. Personality Characteristics
What makes a girl prefer one guy to another? Though physical factors are important, personality is key. Girls answered in an open-response box which personality traits are most important. It seems that the most important thing a guy must have is a sense of humor. 48 responded that this was a key quality in a guy. Following a sense of humor was kindness, intelligence, outgoing, and down to earth. It’s not surprising that girls want a smart guy at Northwestern, and they aren’t hard to find at all. Surprisingly, a few girls said they want a guy who comes off rude and is known as a dick.  I know that girls like bad boys, but this can’t be a healthy quality to want in the long run. Some extremely humorous responses were “very touchy and sexual” and “a bro.” If you’re looking for a bro, stop by the frat quad at any time of the day.

5. Wealth
Thankfully, the majority of girls that answered my survey put that money wasn’t a factor in their type. But, 34.2% of girls wanted a wealthy man only. Maybe not all girls are gold diggers, but some expect you to be able to wine and dine them often.

6. Sports
Most girls want a guy who plays a sport, and the most attractive sport was soccer. After soccer, football and lacrosse players were found to be sexiest.

7. Height
When it comes to true love, size doesn’t matter. But, 64.4% of girls like guys over 6 feet. 31.5% of girls like guys in the range of 5’8 to 6 feet tall. Don’t lose hope if you’re short! 10% of girls surveyed prefer guys under 5’8.

8. Major
Almost half of the girls surveyed said that a specific major wasn’t important in their type of guy, but 31% said they want an Economics major. Businessmen seem to be the ones getting the girls, with Pre-Med and Engineering being the next best majors.

9. Age
The majority of Northwestern girls want a guy that is a year or two older than them. 42.5% of girls want a guy that is their age, and 12.3% want a guy that is much older than them. Cougars don’t seem to exist at Northwestern very often! Only 1 person said they want a younger guy.

10. Other Factors
This was another free-response box for girls to answer if they thought of any other important traits in their type of guy. The most common response was good in bed or the size of his package. I guess size really does matter. Some were very specific, such as “having good shoulders” and some seemed pretty important, such as being nice to his mother/having family values. Attraction was also important, as one girl said, “There must be fireworks” and many girls said chemistry is key. Luckily for a huge population of Northwestern boys, quite a few girls said they want a nerd.

Though this survey only covered a somewhat small percentage of Northwestern girls, it’s interesting to see what characteristics were most important. Maybe we should find out what Northwestern guys want in a girl next.

Monica is a sophomore at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She spent her early years growing up in a small town in Minnesota, but spent the last half of her life in Seoul, South Korea where she developed a city girl love for good food finds and fashion. Journalism has been a major part of her life, but she can also be found relaxing with a cup of coffee, watching movies, and spending time with loved ones. Though she has a tough exterior, Monica is actually a romantic who loves the power of words, the importance of strength in any endeavor, and who always wears her heart on her sleeve.
