Sexy Spring Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Spring is finally coming, though it doesn’t feel that way at Northwestern with the 30 degree weather. What should every girl be searching for to stock up her spring wardrobe? Here are the five main trends for Spring 2011.

1. Elegant Ladylike Pieces – Spring is all about being classy. From florals to lace, the conservative look is back. This is not the season to flaunt what your mother gave you, but embrace clothes that Audrey Hepburn would have worn. Joie’s Sari Romantic Floral Dress (http://www.revolveclothing.com/DisplayProduct.jsp?product=JOIE-WD147&c) is sophisticated yet sexy with the cut-out shoulders. This floral necklace by Juliet & Company (http://www.shopbop.com/jardin-row-necklace-juliet-company/vp/v=1/845524441892115.htm?folderID=2534374302183940&fm=other-shopbysize&colorId=13149) also has the delicate touch necessary for any ladylike ensemble.

2. Colored Jeans – This may seem like an eclectic choice for a trend, but the hottest denim item stores are selling are colored jeans. The main trendy colors are red and blue, but some jean companies have gone into pastels, such as salmon or a mint green. J Brand has a low rise skinny jean in brick red(http://www.intermixonline.com/product/bottoms/denim/exclusive+low+rise+skinny-+brick+red.do?sortby=ourPicks) that has been a top seller at stores like Intermix. Another favorite of mine is Sass & Bide’s light blue stretch “Frayed Misfits” skinny jeans (http://www.bluefly.com/Sass—Bide-light-blue-stretch-Frayed-Misfits-skinny-jeans/cat290028/210824500/detail.fly?cm_mmc=CJ-_-1909792-_-2178999-_-Sass+%26+Bide+light+blue+stretch+%27Frayed+Misfits%27+skinny+jeans&referer=cjunction_2178999_10436858_292816044). While blue jeans will always be in style, this trend is sure to spruce up anything, even a simple white tee.

3. Maxi – I’m not a huge fan of the overwhelming maxi skirt look, but many long dresses are the perfect thing to pack for a weekend trip to the beach or a stroll in the park with the newest crush in your life. Nicole Richie’s line Winter Kate has had tremendous success so far, and her Damien floral silk dress with a lace trim (http://www.shopthetrendboutique.com/wikadadrinfl.html) is worth the splurge. A cheaper solid option is Gypsy’s Italy Maxi Dress (http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446407930&site_refer=AFF001&site_refer=AFF001&siteID=J84DHJLQkR4-VoXRsoD0J01zUCw5o8zg6A&LScreativeid=478927601196&LSlinkid=15&LSoid=218199&LSsid=J84DHJLQkR4) in a rich coral shade to show off the tan that you’re bound to get – from the sun or the tanning beds depending on the weather here.

4. Wood Clogs/Sandals – This is the most versatile trend for the season. From wooden heels to wooden wedges, the neutrality can go with countless outfits. I recently bought Michael Kors’ Belinda Wedge Sandal (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/michael-michael-kors-belinda-wedge-sandal/3182897?origin=category&resultback=0) in the brown leather option, and it is sure to be a staple item for my spring wardrobe. Ash’s Tatiana Wedge Sandals (http://www.shopbop.com/tatiana-wedge-band-instep-sandal/vp/v=1/845524441897131.htm?folderID=2534374302112442&fm=other-shopbysize&colorId=12867) are another good option, because even the black leather straps don’t dominate the wooden aspect of the shoe, and the wooden feature makes the shoe an obvious spring item.

5. Tie-Dye – The 60’s are back with bell-bottom jeans and tie-dye items hitting stores everywhere. Crop tie-dye tops are effortlessly sexy with jeans or those Daisy Dukes you have been waiting to pull out of your closet. But, looser tie-dye tops are also a big hit for the chic grunge style. Patterson J. Kincaid’s Tie Dye La Jollas Tank (http://www.shopbop.com/negative-spinal-tie-eye-jollas/vp/v=1/845524441888844.htm?fm=search-shopbysize) is perfect for a casual spring outfit, and the silk material with a plunge back will make your outfit looks like it’s worth much more than it actually costs. A wonderful tie-dye statement piece for your ensemble is Joie’s Tie Dye Caro Top (http://www.revolveclothing.com/DisplayProduct.jsp?product=JOIE-WS512&c=Tops&s=C&sc=Tie+Dye) Because this is my favorite designer of all time, I bought this piece the moment it came out, and I know it would work for every girl’s spring wardrobe!

Monica is a sophomore at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She spent her early years growing up in a small town in Minnesota, but spent the last half of her life in Seoul, South Korea where she developed a city girl love for good food finds and fashion. Journalism has been a major part of her life, but she can also be found relaxing with a cup of coffee, watching movies, and spending time with loved ones. Though she has a tough exterior, Monica is actually a romantic who loves the power of words, the importance of strength in any endeavor, and who always wears her heart on her sleeve.
