This Sunday, April 7th, saw the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work by UNITY exec, members, and models in their student-run charity fashion show. Each year, the show benefits a different organization, and this year, proceeds went towards Porchlight Counseling Service, a resource for college sexual assault survivors.
“This cause is especially relevant to college students as alarmingly high rates of sexual assault are present on many campuses,” says freshman UNITY member Kelley Park.
After a brief explanation of the organization and the charity it is benefiting, the evening began. UNITY’s goal of embracing and celebrating the unity of this diverse group of members was apparent in the various ethnicities, personalities, and clothing styles worn by the models.
The first round of the catwalk saw fashions from various local boutiques and national retailers, including gigi BOTTEGA and Gap. Each new student-model brought a unique style, pose, and occasional dance to their turn on the stage, while a DJ blasted party tunes.
Next, fashion shifted from local stores to international styles, featuring traditional garments of various countries, including India, Japan, and Qatar.
After a brief intermission, Jamie Lono, a former contestant on NBC’s “The Voice,” took the stage with his band. His “feel-good” music and funny comments engaged the audience, despite a few technical issues.
And finally, UNITY took “local” to a new level by showcasing the work of Northwestern student designers, seamlessly uniting the style of the Northwestern community, the surrounding area, and nations across the globe.
