The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway: Spice up Your Snowpocalypse Style!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Welcome to the Tundra, to the snowpocalypse, to the polar vortex, and to hell. Winter quater is back in full force whether we like it or not.

Sometimes, this can get a little less than glamorous. Complaining about the weather becomes the hottest topic on social media and our outfits can become pretty “blah. Your parka will become your vice, but soon you’ll realize you’re walking around campus wearing the exact same thing every day.

This year, instead of giving into those #freezing #NUproblems hashtags, appreciate the winter wonderland we live in, and don’t let your style slide! Spice things up a little bit with cute winter accessories! Check out these tips for 5 new ways to spice up your every day winter parka!

1.  Cozy Leggings

A pair of classic jeans or black leggings under a parka every day can get old fast. Instead, let some cute cozy leggings peak out in that little space between your coat and boots for a pop of color! Try some fleece lined ones for those extra chilly days! Getting wacky with your leggings can be fun when everything else in your wardrobe starts to look the same! Check these out:

5.  Pull on Disco Leggings, TopShop, $44

2. Hip Headgear

My favorite part of winter style has always been the headwear. I’m a huge hat person so I love being able to wear all of the ones I’ve collected over the years. Instead of your classic knit hat, branch out and try some fuzzy earmuffs or a cute headwrap! My rabbit fur ear muffs were one of my favorite Christmas gifts- they are heavenly. Check these out:

1. Surrell Earmuffs with Velvet Band- Nordstrom, $48

2. Aldo Fidela, $12 Aldo Shoes

3. The North Face Cable Knit Beanie, Macy’s $38

4. Red Slouchy Beanie, Etsy.com, $38

5. Maried Crochet Knit Headwrap, Icing.com, $17

3.These boots were made for Walkin’

Boots are another staple of winter weather. But different boots can compliment your jacket in different ways to make your outfit look different than the day before. Try mixing it up with short and tall boots of different colors.  Or if you have a go to pair, try wearing some cute high socks that will come out the top.

1. Tall- Karen Scott Donnelly Boots, Macy’s, $60

2. Short- Steve Madden Troopa Boot, $100

3 Socks-  Over the Knee Socks, Urban Outfitters, $14/ 2 for $22

4. Makeup

Wearing some bright lipstick or blush can really draw the attention to a cute face surrounded by a furry parka hood. Changing up your makeup style can draw some attention from your same old coat and really brighten up your look.

5. Statement Bag

A bright colored purse goes great with a neutrally colored winter coat. Plus you can use this kind of bag into spring and take it out with you at night!

Try a bright bag like this one Blair carried in an episode of Gossip Girl!
