Album Review: Little Mix’s ‘Get Weird’ Is A Must-Listen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

If you haven’t heard of Little Mix, “Get Weird” will instantly make you obsess over these four talented women. Jesy Nelson, 24, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 24, Jade Thirlwall, 22, and Perrie Edwards, 22, were put together on the “X Factor UK” in 2011 by Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland. An act of fate, the girls were selected because they are all the same height, became one of the best decisions made for pop music.

From hits like “Wings,” “DNA,” “Move” and “Salute,” Little Mix are far from an undiscovered talent. Well now two years after their last album “Salute” was released, the British empowering girl group is back and ready to serenade your ears. “Get Weird” is, dare I say it, the best pop album of 2015 so far.

“Black Magic”

Spending three weeks as the number one song in the UK, the song was the perfect choice first release from album. The 80s pop beat and playful lyrics show off the girls’ lively personalities and set the tone for the exciting and infectious album.

When to listen: When you need a little dose of confidence to talk to your crush.

“Love Me Like You”

Going further back in time on the pop music spectrum, “Love Me Like You” is clearly inspired by 60s Motown music. The harmonies seem effortless and flawless while the girls sing some very tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

When to listen: When you are in the mood for some flirty banter.

“Weird People”

Clearly the song that inspired the album title, “Weird People” represents the dance-pop music that dominated the 80s. If Prince made a record today, it would sound like this.

When to listen: When you decide to go out with your friends and come up with the most outrageous dance moves ever.

“Secret Love Song” (feat. Jason Derulo)

The heart wrenching song features the girls’ soaring vocals so much that Jason Derulo is not really needed in the song. Jesy’s highs notes here are really incredible and highlight her range.

When to listen: When you are single and wondering why every boy has gone mad and doesn’t realize how fantastic you are.

“Hair”

This may be the sassiest song I have ever heard, and I love it! The “heys” and “whats” in the background and the cash register sound serving as a censor make this song so unique.

When to listen:  When your friend isn’t over her ex and you say he was just a jerk, anyway.

“Grown”

When the beat starts in this song and you hear the first “mmms” you know this song will be on repeat. The song is all about paying attention to someone who only likes you because you have grown up and puberty finally kicked in. When the beat drops you will start dancing like crazy.

When to listen: When you are getting ready in the morning because it will boost your mood instantaneously.

“I Love You”

This is the second song that I consider a “grower” because I didn’t immediately love it. But, the lyrics are beautiful and all the girls’ falsettos shine on this song.

When to listen: Anytime you see something or someone you really love. So I’ll be singing this to my dogs.

“O.M.G.”

“O.M.G.” features a lot of production, but it adds to the song unlike overly produced tracks. It sounds like a cross between “Oops I Did It Again” and “Fancy.” Leigh-Anne’s ad-libs are incredible during the last chorus.

When to listen: When you’re hanging out with the best friends and blasting music.

“Lightning”

I have a confession to make: I didn’t like this song at first. But once I listened for a second time, I realized how exceptional and dramatic it is. The beat drop is so unexpected, but the song blows your mind even more when the girls start to sing opera in Latin! Perrie’s high note is from another world and will shatter glass through your speakers.

When to listen: Anytime you are in public so when you start speaking Latin people think you are insane.

“A.D.I.D.A.S.”

Stands for “All day I dream about shh with you.” This song is arguably the ‘naughtiest’ the girls have ever written. They sample Drake’s “Hold On We’re Going Home” and Leigh-Anne raps which she hasn’t done since the first album.

When to listen: It’s so good, so basically anytime when you aren’t around your family members. Because that would be very awkward.

“Love Me or Leave Me”

This will make you feel like crying even if you haven’t broken up with someone or gone through heartache. Jade cries “do you hate me?” and your heart breaks. Seriously, make sure you have tissues next to you when you listen.

When to listen: When you are having a dramatic cry by yourself. (We’ve all done it before).

“The End”

One of two acapellas on the album, it is a great way to finish the album because it is punny and very sincere. There are a lot of big notes, but they nail all of them perfectly.

When to sing: When you are in the shower, since you will be belting it, and probably don’t want anyone to hear you.

“I Won’t”

The end bit sounds like a gospel song with clapping and soulful singing. I can’t describe it any other way than colorful because if you could see music in color it would be this song.

When to listen: When anyone every makes you feel bad about yourself and you need a little boost.

“Secret Love Song Part II”

It’s a little odd and confusing that there are two parts to this song on the album, but part two is much better. It lacks Jason Derulo, and feels more complete compared to part one.

When to listen: Same as “Secret Love Song” because they are essentially the same.

“Clued Up”

It proves that the girls still want to write songs specifically for their young fans, just like they did for their past albums. It might be my favorite because of the powerful message that there is beauty and pain in life but everything will help you grow as a person.

When to listen: Anytime you are struggling with completing something or disappointed because then you know you will get through it.

“The Beginning”

Possibly the best title and best way to ever finish an album. The second acapella is about the bond they will always have as friends. They tell everyone listening: the album is amazing but this is only the beginning and there is so much more to come.

When to listen: When you think about how much you love your friends.

Final thoughts: The harmonies on this album alone make it worth your money but the vocals, lyrics, and personalities behind each song will make you a fan. Little Mix really pushed themselves with this album and proved that patience makes perfection!
