10 Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day in a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, many people in relationships struggle to think of ways to celebrate. While finding ways to be covid-safe may be the biggest of their issues, some are struggling with thinking of ways to celebrate with someone who lives hundreds — or even thousands — of miles away. Celebrating Valentine’s Day while in a long distance relationship can be even trickier than you might expect. Here are eight ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your significant other in a long-distance relationship.

1. Make each other a playlist

Who doesn’t want someone to make a playlist for them? Apps like Spotify allow users to send each other personalized playlists, or even make a collaborative playlist where you can put all of your favorite songs together. Maybe you can even throw in one of “your songs”–so romantic!

2. Send old fashioned love letter

It doesn’t get more romantic than this. Write your significant other a handwritten love letter, just like they did in the good old days. In the envelope, you can add other objects like your favorite photo together, and maybe even spray your signature scent on it. Getting a handwritten note is definitely better than a simple text, and it will help make the day a little more special. It’s always nice getting something in the mail, and this way, they’ll have something physical to hold on to.

3. Play a game

Games are the perfect way to enjoy Valentine’s Day with your partner. We’re Not Really Strangers is a game that offers deep insight into each others’ minds–reviews for this game have been crazy. Comments and pictures of people playing this game and getting pretty emotional are all over social media lately. The Relationship Expansion Pack is perfect for couples who have already said “I love you”, but if your relationship is newer, The Honest Dating Expansion Pack may be better for you. Heads up: things may get serious!

4. Follow the same recipe via FaceTime

Instead of cooking a delicious meal for your significant other, cook one for yourself! Follow the same recipe and see who can make the most presentable dinner. Then, you can enjoy a fancy dinner date via FaceTime. Dress up in your Sunday best to impress your partner. It is basically a dinner at the 5-star restaurant, and probably the closest you will get to a real date for a while.

5. Order each other food delivery

Surprise your partner with food delivery from their favorite restaurant. GrubHub, UberEats and Postmates all allow you to schedule a delivery in advance, and in another state. Just make sure that your partner will be home at whatever time you set it up for–there’s nothing worse than food going to waste!

6. Send them flowers

Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses. Do you still want to give your significant other flowers, but they’re miles away? Websites like FTD allow you to schedule a flower delivery to someone in another state. This modern take on a classic act of love will definitely impress your other half.

7. Plan a future trip

Dream of better days and plan your dream trip together. Pinterest allows you to create a joint board where each person can add images to the same board. Through Airbnb, you can create a folder for whatever location the two of you want to visit and compile places to stay that way. Hop on the phone or FaceTime while you brainstorm!

8. Paint tutorial together

Follow a painting tutorial video and paint together! Bob Ross’ YouTube channel is a great way to test out your artistic skills. It’s a fun way to spend time together and will definitely get you laughing. See who did it best!

9. Send them a favorites box

Send your loved one a box of their favorite things. Their favorite candy, favorite movie, something of their favorite color and other favorites are perfect for the occasion. Care packages are such a simple and thoughtful way to show your partner how much they mean to you.

10. Watch a romantic movie together

This one is for the movie lover couples. Amazon Prime Video and Netflix have watch party options that allow users to watch a movie together and chat about the movie on the same platform. Put on a romantic movie and pop some popcorn for a movie night!

Even though you can’t be with your significant other this year for this special day, you can bridge the distance a little bit with some of these ideas. While your partner is away, pay special attention to giving yourself some love. Make plans with the people you can see, and stay in touch with your family. Your life shouldn’t be on pause for the duration of your LDR!
