Valentine’s Day for the unattached

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

February is here, and everyone knows what that means: heart shaped candies in the grocery store, endless jewelry store commercials, and Hallmark cards and flowers as far as the eye can see. It’s the month of Valentine’s Day. I am not here to put down the holiday, but instead am here to offer alternatives for those of you who have yet to find that special someone whom the day is made to celebrate. Even if you don’t have a significant other, so to speak, I am sure there are people you consider significant in your life. Grab them, mark the calendars and have a great day doing some, or all, of the following ideas.

1. The Somerville Arts Council is holding an event called Nibble at Porter Square Books in Cambridge. Head over for a wide variety on Valentine’s Day for food tasting and fun, because who doesn’t love food any day of the year?

2. Go see a movie, but stay away from the chick flicks and mushy ones if you are not up for some serious PDA. A nice action or comedy with a pal will draw out some laughs and make for some great movie quotes to be used later.

3. Go out to eat, but put a spin on it! Grab food at a food truck and bring it to a favorite part of the city to people watch. Especially on a day where everyone will be out and about, watching dramas unfold could just be the best part of your day.

4. Wake up early or stay up late and get the endorphins going with a nice workout. If you are feeling lonely about being unattached this will make you feel like you could take on the world. Having a gym buddy will make sweating it out that much better.

5. Host a GNO for all of your friends, boys and girls, to enjoy the day together. No one should have to be alone on a day that celebrates love and commitment, so reach out to others who may not have  a significant other and make someone’s day special and full of love.
