NU’s GayBFF: Spring has started to show itself… that doesn’t mean you have to!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Hi Ladies!

Spring is right around the corner (thank God the snow is melting! This southern boy could take no more!)  Before campus gets littered with scantily clad co-eds who think we go to school in Florida, I just wanted to send out this disclaimer: yes, guys will notice you if you bare your skin to the world but I assure you their train of thought does not go from bare chests and thighs to ‘what a nice girl. I would like to date her.’ Of course, if you are looking for that one night stand, rock it and work it girlfriend.

For all of you who are looking for a classier transition from your winter parka to summer bikini, please avoid these common spring faux-pas so you can get noticed… in all the right ways!  Put your best fashion foot forward and own it next season!

Last I checked Americans have the right to bear arms…. not chests.  Unless you are paying your way through school on the poll, please avoid the easy move of throwing on a push up bra and a tank top and heading off to class.  There are many great options out this Spring to convey that you’re sexy without throwing your body in people’s faces.  Draw him in with a little mystery.

Cover up and still look sexy with one of this Springs biggest trends, the motorcycle jacket.  Everyone from Burberry to Yves Saint Laurent is pushing Moto jackets this year but you don’t have to break the bank for style.  Old Navy has this great Moto jacket for only $34.50!

Now if you still want to draw the eye to your neckline, opt for a big chunky necklace instead of the standard plunging neckline. Catherine Malandrino is at the forefront of the chunky jewelry movement this spring with pieces like the one below.

Once again, no need to shell out hundreds to follow the trends, this piece from Zara (pictured below) will only set you back $39.90!

If you haven’t quite gotten back in to beach shape after hibernating all winter, here are some great options to show you why you should love Spring while you get it together! Sun dresses are the perfect flirty and cute way to avoid wearing skin tight clothing this season.  The best thing about sun dresses?  They tend to be cheap! Forever 21 has many great options like this one for UNDER $20!

If dresses aren’t your thing, rock a pair of shorts instead.  Play with the proportions a little bit this season.  Don’t go for the tightest pair of shorts you can find.  The number on the tag may make you feel skinny, but the truth is the tighter the shorts, the larger you end up looking! Find a pair of shorts that you can move comfortably in and don’t suction themselves to your skin. Banana Republic just came out with a whole new line of shorts that will leave you feeling cute and free for around $40.

Now that we’ve covered the body, you can’t forget what is happening below the knees!  To say I’m a shoe enthusiast is an understatement; as one could guess from my 100 Days of Shoes project.  I was praising the day that Spring finally came this year so that the Winter epidemic knows as ‘Uggs’ could finally end.

Ladies, this year lets put a little more effort in to our Spring footwear then throwing on a pair of $3 Old Navy flip flops and calling it a day.  Yes, they are great for the laundry room but there are other inexpensive options that will kick it up a notch. Footwear is an essential part of any outfit…why put in all the effort up top and not continue it below the knee? These ‘Patricius’ cuff sandals from FCUK (below left) are on the pricier side at $125, but they are a great example of what will be happening in fashion this spring.  Looking for a little edge? Try these great Ampari (it’s a fancy word that means ‘bucket’ in Finnish) from Matt Bernson for only $84! (below right). If you’re looking for a pop of Spring color, look no further then these sandals by Blowfish, (below center) available at DSW for under $40!

Last but not least, there is never a reason to abandon fashion and feeling good about yourself.  Bostonians have a knack for looking great no matter what and I would like to see more of that on campus!  Even in the worst of weather we should still put our best selves forward.  For examples of what to rock in Spring Showers check out our own Rachel Kossman’s article on the Catwalk to Campus blog.

Ladies.  You go to Northeastern.  This means that you are smart enough to attend the most applied to private college in the nation!  I hate to see ya’ll sell yourselves short by throwing your sex appeal at everyone.  Make smart fashion choices that show off your best assets without giving a free show.  Be confident and rely on more then just your skin to do the talking for you this Spring.

You’re all BEAUTIFUL!

Love,
Your GayBFF!

Special thanks to Christen Mitchell for keeping me up to date on all the Springs trends!

I am simple , friendly.
