Long Distance Valentine’s Day Survival Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

As Valentine’s Day approached, I realized I was alone for the first time in over two years. Not because I was single (I still feel your pain, though) but because my other half was 3,008 miles away in Scotland. This was hard to come to terms with because although I have been on co-op in Boston for nearly 8 months now, knowing I had someone to spend this holiday with (but couldn’t) was gut-wrenching. Long distance relationships ARE possible; my boyfriend and I are evidence of this. So I want to help you out by telling you ways you and your bae can survive this holiday – no matter how far away you are.

Get Personal

Send your loved one a personalized card from Moonpig! You can create one full of all your cute and ridiculous pictures plus you can even write your own modern day love letter! An added bonus is that they are able to send it straight to your boo’s door.

Plan a Date

Just because you are far away does not mean you can’t spend the day together! Plan a date via Skype or Facetime – they are free applications! You can see each other AND arrange to do the same thing. Why not order in takeout, stress free and easy to match no matter where you are located? No high-priced menus in fancy restaurants full of lovey-dovey couples. Just you and your significant other with no interruptions.

“Open When…” Letters

I wrote a bunch of these before my move to Boston to give to my boyfriend – though I am pretty sure he has forgotten they exist. However, I thought they were really cute, and writing them is a way you can always be there even when you’re not. You can customize these however you wish, they can be long or short, or even full of games, pictures, and presents!

Send a Telegram

My boyfriend sent me a telegram, and it was so outside of the box and romantic! I felt so important and it looked legit. You can find them here

Pillow

Another going away gift I purchased was a pillow; I customized it with loads of pictures of us. (I am the cutest.) This meant my boyfriend always had something to cuddle when he misses me.

Postpone

Of course, you can always make your own Valentine’s Day. One thing we plan to do is postponing our usual rituals by 6 months in order to create our own. This way we don’t have to fork out loads of money for a hotel or set-menu prices in restaurants. We have basically created our own holiday – at half the price.

Make Coupons

Coupons are the modern day equivalents to IOUs, so buy them online or get creative and make your own! These can be themed along the lines of ‘Get out of jail free,’ ‘No arguments today,’ ‘a trip to see you,’ ‘Skype date,’ etc.

Tell them why you love them!

Valentine’s Day is all about love. Use the time to send your significant other texts about why you love them and make them feel special!

She is in her 3rd year working towards a Business degree and is spending her time in Boston with Northeastern's Global Experience Office. She is an enthusiastic member of Northeastern's DIY Arts and Crafts club as she loves to try to make pretty things, even if she isn't exactly any good. Her interests include travelling and she feels her favorite place so far has to be Paris, reading Harry Potter, blogging about her time in Boston and instagraming cute puppies. Although new to HerCampus she is excited to start contributing towards the magazine.
