I Tried Being a Morning Person for a Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

After a relaxing Thanksgiving break and a not-so-relaxing 6 AM flight back to Boston, the last thing I wanted was to have trouble readjusting to my daily routine. So, I decided to attempt being morning person during this busy last week of classes to measure just how productive I could be.

Monday

After landing in Boston Monday morning at 6:15 AM and reaching my dorm at around 7, I unpacked, ate a hearty breakfast and got ready for class. This deviates from my usual routine since I usually never have time for breakfast as I always carry coffee, but sitting down and eating a meal while catching up on social media was a perfect start to my day.

After my first (and last) class of the day, I spent the majority of my day at the architecture studio finishing up some work. I also had three, wholesome meals that ultimately contributed greatly to my work ethic and motivation.

Tuesday

Even though my early morning class was canceled on Tuesday (thank you snow!), I still got up early to eat cereal and have coffee. I had a chill morning, meaning I was browsing social media and bullet journaling until class started. From then on, I found myself more productive throughout the rest of the day.

Wednesday

All I could think about was why I hadn’t started this “getting up early” thing earlier in the semester! I was more energized, more productive, and happier. I was actually eating breakfast (which, quite frankly, hasn’t been a regular occurrence since high school).

The last day of classes went really well; it was a bittersweet end to an amazing semester. I was even able to get some homework and project work done before classes started due to my early rise.

I learned quite a bit from this experiment. First of all, I love quiet time in the morning where I can bullet journal and browse daily current events. And though I only did this for three days, I learned that it is quite helpful to eat breakfast in the morning instead of always carrying a cup of coffee. Overall, this was a beneficial exercise and I’m excited to take it further next semester.
