Name: Scarlett Lamb

Year: Freshman (Class of 2018)

Major: Human Services

Hometown: London, England

You’ve been at Northeastern for just over a month, yet you’ve raised over $1,200 for Relay for Life. How do you do it?

I first began fundraising for a variety of cancer charities through my high school’s Cancer Relief Organization (CRO) during my junior year and became co-president as a senior. The first event I organized called “Pink Out Friday” raised just over $4840 for Breast Cancer Care UK.  For my 18th birthday, my granddad built me a lemonade stand, which became the center of CRO. We adopted the slogan “Fighting Cancer One Cup At A Time” and held fourteen themed events throughout the school year. Just from selling lemonade, cupcakes, brownies and candy for a $1 we raised almost $10,000 to donate to various cancer charities in both the UK and the USA.  Coming to Northeastern, I knew I would want to continue raising awareness and money for cancer relief charities. My older sister told me how to get involved with Relay For Life and now I am part of the activities planning committee.  All my family, friends and teachers back home are really supportive of my commitment to relay and have contributed to my fundraising success. My younger sister Cher is now the co-president of CRO, and at their first event this year they sold a tray of brownies and dedicated the proceeds to my relay fund. Why are you interested in supporting Cancer Relief Organizations?

A number of people in my life have been affected by cancer so it is a cause close to my heart. An average of 7.6 million people lose their battle to cancer each year and I am determined to be part of the group that helps lower that statistic. By doing my part whether it be donating, fundraising or raising awareness, every little bit counts. I invite any interested Northeastern student to join my team FRESHMAN FIGHT BACK and participate in Relay for Life on March 21, 2014.

What do you plan on doing in the future with this?

I’m majoring in human services with the intention of expanding my charitable work through the co-op program and alternative spring break program that Northeastern offers. I aspire to one day work for a non-profit organization or even do something crazy like build my own orphanage in a third world country. I’ve joined a number of clubs this semester that focus on giving back to the community and I hope I can help make a difference.
