Ways that I Plan to be More Eco-Friendly in 2021

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NMSU chapter.

It’s pretty obvious that the earth needs our help. While the average citizen isn’t to blame for a majority of the world’s pollution, there is something that we can do to help. I have personally made it my New Year’s resolution to be more eco-friendly in my everyday life. It makes me feel good about the choices I’m making, and I’m producing less waste in the process. These are small and easy changes that can easily be applied to your daily routine. I highly encourage everyone else to join me.

1. Ditch Your Makeup Sponges

Your makeup sponge, while terrific at blending your foundation, will eventually end up in a landfill. Ultimately, your beauty sponge is made up of non biodegradable plastic that will take decades to break down. I personally have switched to a high-quality blending brush that will last me years with proper care. That being said, the better you take care of your makeup brushes, the longer they’ll last and you won’t have to throw them away. Be sure to try and not get too much water in the handle of your brushes so that the glue keeping them together doesn’t break down and cause your brush to fall apart.

2. No More Toothpaste

I have officially switched to using tooth tabs instead of toothpaste. Tooth tabs do a great job at cleaning your teeth without the plastic tube. Toothpaste tubes are often not recyclable and will just end up in a landfill. These little things often come in biodegradable packaging or a reusable glass jar that can be refilled. All you have to do is put that tab in your month, chew it until it becomes a paste and then just start brushing with a wet toothbrush. While we’re here, you should also consider mouthwash tabs. These also come in refillable, glass jars. Just put a small amount of water in a glass, put the tab in to dissolve and swish away. Biodegradable and refillable dental floss is also something to consider. Do your research as to what brands will work best for you, as they all have different ingredients.

3. Say Goodbye to Body Wash

Body wash comes in a plastic bottle, and therefore creates more waste. It’s great if you can recycle those bottles, but it’s best to not use them altogether. I made the eco-friendly switch to bars of soap instead of buying bottles of body wash. There are plenty of great and local brands of soap that not only smell amazing, but are great for your skin. Once again, look through different brands that have different ingredients and find what works best for you. I’ve personally found plenty of bars that are super moisturizing and that smell amazing. Just be sure to get a soap saver so that they last longer.

I hope that this was able to help you become more eco-friendly this year. It isn’t much but any little bit helps. The less waste you produce the better, so try to find less wasteful alternatives to the things that you use in everyday life.
