Valentine’s Day Woes: Don’t go back with your Ex, because you’re lonely or want a cute V-day gift. Do this instead.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NMSU chapter.

It’s grocery shopping day and you enter your favorite store. You grab your cart and stroll along, not a care in the world. Scratch that. You’re a college student, you got 99 problems (and here comes one more). That’s when you see it. Aisles overstuffed with pink and red hearts, oversized teddy bears, and overpriced chocolate. Then suddenly that feeling creeps up on you and you know it’s coming. Valentine’s Day.

For many, cupid day is an exciting time, full of love and romance. Though for some, it’s a reminder that things aren’t quite the same anymore and that person that rhymes with the word “next” pops into your brain. Yes, your ex. It hasn’t been that long and even if it has, you remember him or her like it was yesterday. However, this is the time to be strong because you are. Don’t get back with your ex because Valentine’s day is next week and you’re starting to feel lonely or your fixated on all those cute V-day goodies. There is a reason it didn’t work out and that’s perfectly okay. It’s okay not to be so okay. But in the mean time to get over this momentary love season sickness, here’s a few things you can do.

  • Go Out with Your Girls!

When times get tough, your girls can help get you through it. Have a night out, “Saturday, call the girls, get ’em gassed up”, inspiring words by Drake, himself.  Go dancing, go see a movie, have a spa day. Plan a secret-Santa-type Valentine exchange with your friends. They are the ones who make you “dumb” laugh and the ones who have seen you “ugly” cry. So, have some fun and share love day with the ones you truly love.

  • Treat Yo Self!

If you’re a Parks and Recs fan, you know what I mean. If not it’s okay, its self-explanatory! You know what I mean. Do something for you, be kind to yourself. Whether it’s taking a long, well-deserved nap, buying that Fashion Nova dress (that’s finally in stock), or getting down on your homework because your education is where it’s at. Do something for you that makes you happy. Be good to yourself, physically, mentally, and emotionally. TLC is all you need.

Breakups are hard, especially as Valentines approaches. Your ex may contact you or you may feel the need to contact them. Feelings don’t just disappear, but they do fade. Days get better and you’ll feel better. Surround yourself with good people and good vibes. This holiday is all about love, so love yourself. In a week the aisles will be back to normal; after everything is sold for half-price and hey, that’s another way to treat yo self too!
