Feminist TV Shows that are Available on Netflix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NMSU chapter.

Everyone needs to sit down and have a good Netflix binge every once in a while. Here are some suggestions that specialize in taking down the patriarchy. So go on and binge away on these television shows that are great for any empowered feminist.

  • One Day at a Time

This show just recently got renewed for a third season and rightfully so. This is focused on a Cuban-American family who is just trying to get by the best that they can. This show is hilarious and so wonderfully and sincerely human. This show is not afraid to talk about taboo topics such as mental health, sexual orientation, gender identity, and religion, not to mention, it is incredibly diverse. Get ready to both laugh and cry as this program takes you on an emotional journey that is completely enjoyable the whole way through.

  • Queer Eye

A reboot of the popular reality series “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”. This show is taking down toxic masculinity one makeover at a time, the only bad thing that can be said about this show is that there are only eight episodes to binge. This is one of the most wholesome television series that has come out recently. Every episode is so enlightening, funny and charming. The cast of this show is so amazing and they genuinely improve the lives of those they have to makeover. This show teaches all of us that self-love is just as important as loving others and that being comfortable in your own skin is the healthiest thing that you can do for both yourself and your loved ones.

  • GLOW

Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling is the name of the game here and it is fabulous. Watch as some amazing and unique woman throw down in the ring and in their everyday lives. This show is all about female empowerment and finding confidence in a world that constantly tries to tear you down. The magic of the 1980s is perfectly captured in this show that can make any woman feel that they can kick down anything that dares to stand in their way. This show will give anyone the courage to tackle and dropkick the things that are keeping them down the most.

  • Charmed

For something a little more retro, Charmed is a show about three sisters who are all very powerful witches. This show is magical in all the right ways and the power of sisterhood really shines here. Watch as some amazingly powerful sisters kick some evil butt and save the world. Yes, it can be a little campy, but who doesn’t need that every once in a while. This show sparked feminist awakenings in so many people and for a very good reason. It is feminist fantasy and magic done in the best way possible.

  • iZombie

Don’t let the title fool you, this show is way more clever than people tend to give it credit for at first glance. iZombie is about a nurse turned detective when she is also turned into a zombie. Whenever she eats a brain, she gains the person’s memories and personality traits, which she uses to solve their murders. This insane premise is so well realized and executed. This could have easily been one of the worst shows, but it is one of the best and smartest on TV right now. Our protagonist is a woman who does not let a terrible situation get her down and she, in fact, uses it to help others. This show is a funny, feminist and an insanely clever take on the zombie genre that is definitely worth the binge.

  • Supergirl

The world really does need more girls to save it, and Supergirl does just that. This show is not just about our title character saving the world and taking names. We get to see a woman come into her own and realize the full power and potential that she has. It is about time that we get a superhero show with a female protagonist and Supergirl delivers. The show is lighthearted fun and full of color. Watch this show and feel proud to be a woman. Supergirl is incredibly inspiring and uplifting that is great for when you need a good confidence boost.
