B’s Get Degrees: First Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NMSU chapter.

As I woke up to the blaring sound of my alarm clock at 6 a.m. I tried to remember why the heck my alarm was going off that early. And then it hit me. I had that “school thing” that started today.

Welcome to the last semester of my college experience, or what I like to call it, “the daily struggle of dealing with senioritis and caffeine addiction on top of figuring out what you want to do with your life while everyone harasses you about becoming an adult.”

Bring it on.

Per usual, I decided to opt for the extra 20 minutes of sleep instead of using that time to get ready because, in reality, I don’t care about looking cute nor can I deny the comfort of hoodies. They’ve suffered the loneliness in my closest for too long because for the past three-and-a-half years I’ve been trying to look “presentable.” I grabbed a pen — no backpack or notebook — and walked out the door.

The rest of the day was a mind-numbing blur of syllabi and getting hounded about plagiarism. I literally said to myself, “I swear if this professor lectures on syllabus day I’m going to walk out.”

The entire first week was pretty similar to this first-day routine. I’ve been told many times I need to enjoy my last semester in college because it’s going to fly by. So I found myself walking to my classes, with headphones in of course, trying to pump myself up, thinking: “I love this school, I love this school…oh gosh, please don’t talk to me…I love this school, I love this school.”

Honestly, I am trying to enjoy these last four months and all the unforeseen excitement and devastation they will likely bring. But trying to survive 10-hour days on campus, let alone enjoy them, requires some assistance.

So to drown my sorrows, I went out. A lot. I went from dressing up as an 80s Styx groupie for my best friend’s theme party one night to the next putting on my cowboy boots and two-stepping until the morning.

Thus, is the story of my life now. Throwing all my energy into work, crying over piles of homework and attempting to see my friends more than just once a month.

This blog series will consist of the tales of my last semester of college — the highs, the lows and all the juicy details in between. It’s a trek we can all relate to, and I invite you to join the ride on this first-class journey. (Please keep all hands and feet inside while the vehicle is in motion).
