I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but finals are approaching much faster than we realized – how is there only a month of the school year left? As a first year student still in the process of navigating this post-strike semester, myself and many of my peers have yet to experience their first college final. Which is both a blessing and a curse.

Fortunately, New York City is home to some of the best study spots that will take you on an exciting journey before you have to sit down to study. I have rounded up some of my favorite little spots (because we don’t gatekeep here) and if you’re not feeling adventurous already, keep reading for some hopeful encouragement to get outside the house!

The New York Public Library

I know you’re probably thinking, “This is a tourist attraction!” But after some major exploring, I discovered that there are many rooms within the NYPL you can escape to that will bring you far, far away from the bustling crowds of sightseers.

The Rose Main Reading Room is probably one of the most beautiful rooms I have ever stepped foot in. Reminiscent of the library in Beauty and the Beast, this room has walls upon walls of bookshelves and a high looming ceiling adorned with the most ethereal chandeliers and artwork.

If simple is more your style, you’ll love the Edna Barnes Salomon Room. Its open layout and long, dark wood tables are prime for spaced out seating. I’ve never not had an open seat for me in this room, which is quite impressive considering how many people visit the NYPL on a regular basis.

Blue Stripes Cacao Shop

This one’s a fan favorite among New School students and with its insanely close proximity to the UC, it’s no wonder why. It took me a while to get around to visiting this cute little shop, and it’s an experience I don’t regret one bit. It’s definitely a more crowded option since it’s so popular, so early morning study sessions are likely the way to go. With its romantic French ambience and quaint little tables surrounded by bookshelves, it’s hard not to fall in love with Blue Stripes.

Cafe Flor

This place is hands down, my favorite place to study in the city. It’s insanely versatile too: half floral shop, half cafe/bar. Flower bouquets and all kinds of plant life lining the walls makes for a breath of fresh air (literally) in this concrete jungle. There’s a wide array of tables to sit at in the cafe, and couches in the front if you’re looking for comfort. And as a side note, the music is always a different vibe every time you go.

Starbucks Reserve

Ironically, I found this place when Cafe Flor was too packed for me to secure a seat. Starbucks Reserve is not your average Starbucks though with its larger space, ample tables and different menu. It has a more upscale atmosphere than its regular counterpart and it definitely works better as a study spot. And though the drink menu is less diverse, they have several dining options that will give you that much needed fuel in your studies.

Ariston Flowers and Cafe

In case you couldn’t tell already, I’m extremely fond of flowers. Even if you don’t share this passion, it’s refreshing to be surrounded by nature, especially when you’re studying. Upon stepping into the cafe, you’re met with walls lined with all kinds of flowers from roses to tulips to orchids, all in varying hues. But as you go further, it opens into a cafe with pink cherry blossoms lining the high ceilinged walls. This cute cafe is across the street from the UC, so it’s yet another prime location for New School students. Definitely a great spot to both celebrate the beginning of spring and the end of the semester!
