One article of Y2K clothing that is highly controversial is the low-rise jean. As a lover of high-rise jeans myself, I can understand and empathize with the collective panic some feel as low-rise jeans have become popular again. However, I want to propose a radical notion: What if we dressed our bodies the way we like rather than worrying about trends?Â
Even though low-rise jeans are becoming trendy again, you absolutely don’t have to wear them if you dislike them. Even though low-rise jeans are becoming trendy again, you can still wear high-rise jeans. Even though low-rise jeans are becoming trendy again, that doesn’t mean you have to treat your body or the way you dress it as a trend.
Another issue that often comes up when discussing low-rise jeans is the concern that only people with thin bodies can wear low-rise jeans. Once again, I contend that we should stop viewing our bodies as subject to trends. All ranges of bodies are beautiful and can rock any article of clothing. If you like low-rise jeans and are afraid to wear them because you feel you don’t fit the perfect image of who gets to wear low-rise jeans, I encourage you to fight that outdated notion and wear the jeans anyways.Â
“Trendy” articles of clothing may come and go, but we shouldn’t view those clothes as off-limits as a result of how our bodies look. Everyone deserves to look and feel good and wear the clothes they like. Therefore, the concept of trendy as we know it needs to evolve. Trends shouldn’t determine who can wear what or what is currently acceptable to wear. Rather, a trend should just be an article of clothing that is popular right now.Â
Wearing a cut of jeans other than what is currently popular shouldn’t be something we fear or feel like an outcast for doing. So go ahead, put on those high-rise jeans (or low-rises if you like), and rock them no matter what is currently “trending.”
